Operations Research Analyst Intern
The Capabilities, Analysis and Development (CAD) division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking an Operations Research Analyst Intern to support the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). DHS S&T is responsible for conducting and coordinating Research and Development (R&D) activities across the Department to research, develop, transition, and integrate cutting-edge capabilities to DHS Components, as well as to monitor and maintain the adequacy and operation of existing capabilities.
As a valued contributor to our team, you will support projects requiring interdisciplinary operations research methods including mathematical modeling, simulation, statistics, and data analysis. This includes but is not limited to developing and applying models and concepts that help to illuminate management issues and suggest solutions approaches using predictive analytics, geospatial analysis, big data analysis, optimization, game theory, forecasting, process and mathematical modeling, and probability and statistics.

Applicants for this position may support a variety of requirements and analysis projects for a range of government sponsors. Successful candidates will:
* Exercise considerable originality to define problems, visualize approaches, and coordinate technical guidance
* Apply and extend new methods requiring innovative operations research or mathematical approaches
* Perform complex, specialized analyses such as systems analysis, requirements analysis, gap analysis, operations analysis, cost analysis, and systems engineering
* Conduct data storytelling by generating reports, models, and visualizations that characterize datasets, communicate actionable insights, and enhance the utility of data
Required Qualifications:
* Must be a currently enrolled, full-time student in a bachelor’s degreeprogram or above, at an accredited university
* Familiarity with one or more of the following languages: Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, SAS, Stata, SPSS
* Must be a U.S. Citizen
* Must be able to obtain and maintain DHS suitability
* Must be able to work in ARAs Alexandria, VA office on a hybrid-schedule during summer 2025
Desired Qualifications:
* Advanced skill with one or more of the following languages: Python, R, Julia
* Experience with probability theory, modeling and simulation (stochastic and deterministic), and familiarity with tools like NetLogo, Arena, ExtendSim, JaamSim
* Familiarity with workflow analysis and data manipulation tools like Alteryx, Tableau Prep, or Knime
* Experience conducting defensible analyses and assessments, and providing data-driven recommendations
