High School Outreach Program
For the past 8 years, the League of Women Voters has administered a high school outreach program in Franklin County to talk with students about the importance of voting. In 2024, 16 high schools participated in the program. We plan to continue and expand this program in Spring 2025.
The youth of today are coming of age in a time of unprecedented diversity and opportunity. Building a powerful democracy starts with empowering young voters with voter education and registration. This program aims to encourage young people to get and stay involved.
We know that many young adults do not participate in our democratic system by voting. In the November, 2024 election only 42% of young voters (18-29) voted, in comparison to the overall voter turnout rate of 65%.Young people report that they lack access to information about the registration and voting process that would empower them to become engaged voters.
Through the High School Outreach program LWV volunteers or staff members:
1. Set up classroom visits to talk about the importance of voting (typically in a government/social studies class).
2. Engage in small group discussions about the importance of voting and being active citizens.
3. Assist age-eligible students in filling out a voter registration form.
4. Collect all registration forms and turn them in to the appropriate county board of elections office.
