Health and Wellness Intern

Expand your clinical expertise, enhance your cultural competency, and make a difference in youth health care by becoming a Cross-Cultural Health Intern.  Interns work under the supervision of the Director of Health and Wellness, Village providers and deans to provide care to villagers and staff in a dynamic, multicultural immersion environment.

Apply for one of our two intern cohorts offered each summer  

  • Cohort 1: June-July (6 wks: 1 wk orientation + 5 weeks in a village health center)
  • Cohort 2 July-Aug  (5 wks: 1 wk orientation + 4 weeks in a village health center)
  • Full summer placement negotiable

Location: Opportunities in our Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish or Russian Villages. All villages located in Bemidji, MN

What You’ll Gain:

  • Real-World Clinical Skills: Get over 200 clinical hours practicing medication management, first aid, triage, and mental health support
  • Youth Patient Advocacy: Be the voice and care provider for youth, managing daily healthcare needs and coordinating off-site care when necessary.
  • Technical Proficiency: Build expertise in documentation and learn to navigate electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Cultural Competency: Deepen your understanding of culturally competent healthcare by working in diverse communities.
  • Certifications: Earn Wilderness First Aid, CPR/First Aid, and lifeguard certifications, adding valuable credentials to your resume.
  • Project Leadership: Complete two impactful projects focused on cross-cultural health topics.

You Will:

  • Collaborate with Village providers (RNs, MDs) & Village Deans to provide for the healthcare needs of staff and villagers
  • Use an electronic medical records system to enter and maintain the health records of the Village
  • Transport patients to health care facilities as needed
  • Instruct villagers and staff in first-aid and health responsibilities
  • Attend weekly intern meetings and complete 2 short projects on culturally responsive care
  • Adapt to constantly changing environment with flexibility and a problem-solving style
