Mentor Young Adults with Disabilities this Summer

The Staff Assistant Experience (SAE) is a residential transition-to-independence program for neurodiverse young adults ages 18-25. Over the summer months, SAE runs a summer program that allows  participants to work on independent living and vocational skills while also engaging in a recreational program at a summer camp. We are seeking college students interested in related fields to act as residential mentors and direct support staff for our young adult participants this coming summer. All staff are expected to live on campus in communal housing alongside participants. Room and board is provided, along with a stipend and travel bonus.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and assess the skills of young adults and implement structures to ensure participants’ safety/well-being
  • Organize, lead, and supervise developmentally appropriate on- and off-campus recreation activities (hiking, indoor/outdoor sports, crafts, movies, bowling, ice-skating, canoeing, visits to local parks and historical sites)
  • Serve as a job coach by orienting young adults to tasks, working alongside them, and providing feedback on their performance in one or more of the following on campus work experiences: organic farming/small farm animal care, sales/retail, clerical support, camp counseling/youth recreation
  • Supervise participants in their living space, including residing in a communal space with participants and other staff members

Qualifications:

Many counselors are students and emerging professionals in the fields of Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, and related fields, but no previous experience in this type of work is necessary. We do ask you to exemplify the following: patience, commitment, a readiness to learn, and a willingness to be of service to others.
