Deputy Juvenile Officer
Starting Salary: $50,704.74 per year (with benefits)
JOB DESCRIPTION: Supervise juveniles and families referred to the Juvenile Office for child abuse/neglect, status offenses, and law violations. This includes assessing juveniles and families for risks and needs, formulating recommendations, and ensuring that they follow through with recommended or court ordered services. This position works under the direction of the Supervisor – Court Services and may require working evenings and weekends.
- Interviews and assesses families who have been referred to the Juvenile Officer for child abuse/neglect, delinquency, and status offenses to determine appropriate services and recommendations for court. Services and recommendations should serve the best interest of a child.
- Completes criminal record checks on family members and possible and potential placement providers. Obtains records from other agencies to include: CD, schools, hospitals, mental health, and drug treatment providers.
- Serves summonses and subpoenas.
- Prepares written Social Investigations that will be admitted to court.
- Testifies in court, under oath, to justify information and recommendations contained in your Social Investigation.
- Supervises juveniles on formal or informal probation and children in foster care. Helps ensure the families follow through with recommended or court ordered services and treatment.
- Conducts field work to include visits to homes, residential facilities, schools, and service providers.
- Visits juveniles in the detention facility.
- Transports juveniles in work vehicles.
- Collaborate and attend meetings with outside agencies including CD, DYS, schools, police departments, and service providers.
- Reads juveniles their rights and observe police interrogations to ensure due process.
- Observes Child Advocacy Center interviews when applicable.
- Enters and updates data in the juvenile information system.
- Attends work related trainings and conferences.
- Occasional on-call duties.
- Meets regularly with the Unit Supervisor to discuss case management.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Unit Supervisor or Juvenile Officer/Family Court Administrator.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Criminology/Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited university.
Job Experience:
- 1-3 years of experience.
- Experience in the juvenile justice field or child welfare system preferred, in particular, a professional position within the courts.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Must have considerable knowledge of local Court policies and procedures.
- Requires considerable knowledge of Missouri statutes, in particular the Juvenile Code and the Criminal Code, and Child Abuse/Neglect and Permanency Planning.
- Must have considerable knowledge of the Supreme Court Rules of Practice and Procedure in Juvenile Court.
- Requires computer skills in data entry, word processing, and modification of standardized forms as necessary.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Requires the ability to oversee case management for juveniles and family members.
- Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Requires the ability to apply principles of planning and coordinating.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
- Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
