The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh, and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit, and work.
Description of Work:
This position performs routine quality data entry and management for all animal records in the animal management database. This position will also work closely with the husbandry and veterinary teams performing diagnostic procedures, specimen collection, and administering medications as prescribed. Excellent communication skills and knowledge of animal welfare standards and records management best practices is essential. Primary responsibilities include:
1. Enter and provide oversight of routine data entry for all collection animals such as acquisitions/dispositions, moves, feedings, water chems, animal welfare assessments, etc
2. Generate annual inventory reports and specific census requests by curators and directors
3. Communication with the registrar and database programmer may be expected to report system errors
4. Assist in training staff in animal record keeping, records management and data standards
5. Assist with annual permitting and licensing renewals and reporting, including new applications
6. Provide clinical assistance to vet team on site visit days
7. Help with medication administration and follow up reminders working with husbandry to ensure treatment plans are administered and documented
8. Assist with drug and medical supply inventory
9. Assist medical lab entry as necessary during high demand season
10. Help with onsite routine fecal exams
11. Help with food ordering and yearly food analysis
12. Assist animal care team with animal welfare assessments
13. Assist animal care team with enrichment ideas and helping with the approval process with vet staff.
14. Assist animal care team train with medical base behaviors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
To qualify for this position, you must meet all the following KSA's listed below, and they must be listed on your application:
- General knowledge of taxonomy, natural history, animal husbandry
- Experience with animal database management (Tracks software experience preferred)
- Experience performing veterinary diagnostic procedures and providing medical treatments to non-domestic animals, preferably including fish and other aquatic animals.
- Experience with inventory management and organization of an animal clinic-type facility
Education and Experience:
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to
knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
