Postdoctoral Scholar in Electromagnetic Geophysics
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.
The Earth Scientist in this postdoctoral position is an outstanding Applied Geophysicist with training and working knowledge in electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods. You will help manage various EM field data acquisition campaigns for funded geologic carbon storage (GCS) and geothermal projects, and provide processing, modeling, and inversion, interpretation of the results. You will also use various modeling and inversion codes available at LBNL to perform EM sensitivity and survey design studies. Aligned with Energy Geosciences (EGD) strategic direction regarding the sustainable use of the Earth’s resources, these methods will be utilized in a variety of contexts relevant to DOE’s mission of finding scientific solutions for the sustainable utilization of the subsurface, including characterization and monitoring of geological carbon storage, geothermal systems, oil and gas reservoirs, nuclear waste disposal, and groundwater management. You will take advantage of world-class experimental and computational facilities at Berkeley Lab, including LBNL’s unique Geosciences Measurement Facility which has extensive resources for novel EM field data acquisition including high-temperature wirelines, downhole tools, recording systems, instrument fabrication facilities, as well as more traditional geophysical instrumentation. Active participation in the writing of proposals is encouraged.
What You Will Do:
- Lead EM field data collection effort for various geologic carbon storage, geothermal and/or groundwater/environmental projects.
- Process EM data that are collected in various projects.
- Use available EM forward modeling and inversion codes for sensitivity studies, survey design, and interpreting data.
- Work with project team members collecting other types of data to provide multi-physics/global interpretation.
- Publish work in peer reviewed journals and present at workshops and conferences
- Contribute to writing proposals.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Help develop new processing, modeling and/or inversion codes for use with EM data.
- Help develop machine learning / artificial intelligence algorithms for EM data processing, imaging, or modeling.
- Help design and test acquisition system for making various types of EM measurements.
What is Required:
- PhD in geophysics or related field with an emphasis in electromagnetic methods.
- Training in electromagnetic geophysical methods for subsurface characterization from a few meters depth to tens of kilometers depth.
- Knowledge and hands on experience in collecting some types (magnetotelluric, CSEM, TEM, AEM,SIP) of EM field data.
- Knowledge and experience in processing modeling /inversion/ interpretation of EM geophysical data.
- Knowledge of various approaches to multi-physics geophysical data integration, inversion and interpretation.
- Past record in terms of publishing and presenting work.
Desired Qualifications:
- Hands on knowledge in coding up forward modeling and/or inversion codes for use in interpreting EM data.
- Experience with machine learning methodologies as applied to geophysical data processing/modeling/imaging.
- Working knowledge of electronics required for accurate EM data acquisition.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- The monthly salary range for this position is $6,476.00 - $8,619 and is expected to start at $6,476.00 or above. Postdoc positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
