Intern - Water Treatment and Distribution, Public Works

The City of Minneapolis is currently seeking qualified candidates for the following internship positions on the Public Works Water Treatment & Distribution team:

  • Public Works Data Collection Intern (four positions)
  • Public Works Water Laboratory Intern (one position)
     

The Public Works Water Treatment & Distribution division's primary responsibility is treatment, distribution and maintenance of water for Minneapolis and surrounding communities. This staff is also in charge of water connections and permits.

Work Location: This position currently works on-site only. These positions will be working throughout the City of Minneapolis at multiple locations:

  • Water East Side Yard (935 5th Ave SE) 
  • OR
  • Fridley Water Treatment Plant (4100 Marshall St NE)


Compensation: Wages start at $21.632 hourly, $21.955 hourly for returning interns

Duration: May to August, possibility to extend through December 

Hours:
•  Up to 40 hours per week
•  Willing to accommodate school schedules
•  Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm

Job Duties and Responsibilities

While working on the Water Treatment & Distribution team, some of the opportunities you will experience are:

•Assist with field data collection, documentation, and analysis.

•Utilize ArcGIS as-built records with mobile field technology to determine the system configuration.

•Assist the City in a meaningful project that will impact flushing frequency by City staff for years to come.

•Demonstrate a positive and welcoming attitude with the residents and communities we serve in Minneapolis.

 

Data Collection Intern

• Flushing hydrants throughout the city in locations where water circulation is limited by system dead ends

• Collect and enter data, evaluate disinfection residual results before and after flushing

•Returning to sites after a few weeks to verify that the water quality is maintained

 

Water Laboratory Intern

• Work with water scientists to design and implement a plan to monitor distribution water quality parameters.

• Collect and enter data within the laboratory environment 

 

Position Highlights

As an intern in this division, you will be provided a city vehicle and cell phone for field assignments. In addition to this, the summer intern program offers professional development opportunities as well as tours of other Public Works worksites and facilities including the water treatment plant, fleet equipment garages, the recycling yard, and the transportation engineering labs. 

 

Required Qualifications

All applicants must:
• Be 18 or older
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Registered for college and/or graduated within one year of the position announcement
• Be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather 
 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

• Self-motivated candidates should have the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Selection Process
The selection process for this position will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter and then a panel interview.  Since the selection process will consist of a review of the application, resume and cover letter, it is to your advantage to be as complete and thorough on your application forms, supplemental application and other support documentation/materials as is possible. Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made.  Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing.  Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.  This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
 
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list.  If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
