DREAM Peer Coach
As a DREAM Peer Coach, your primary role will be to support and guide DREAM student participants, helping them achieve academic success and personal growth. DREAM Peer Coaches will be responsible for meeting regularly with their assigned participants to build relationships, address concerns, and provide academic support. DREAM Peer Coaches will work under the supervision of the DREAM Coordinator in University Housing and will play a critical role in ensuring the success and retention of student participants.
Primary Job Duties
- Meet regularly with participants assigned by the DREAM Coordinator to provide personalized academic and personal support, connecting them to relevant campus resources when needed.
- Serve as a mentor and role model, fostering strong, supportive relationships with student participants.
- Demonstrate and coach effective learning strategies to help students develop academic resilience, positive learning habits, and motivation.
- Host weekly study groups and office hours to provide academic support in a collaborative environment.
- Collaborate with the DREAM Coordinator to plan and participate in events, workshops, and activities that enhance student success.
- Organize and lead academic workshops focused on study skills, time management, and test preparation.
- Maintain accurate schedules using Google Calendar and share them with the DREAM Coordinator.
- Track student progress and provide timely updates to the DREAM Coordinator to ensure students receive necessary support.
- Attend bi weekly one-on-one meetings with the DREAM Coordinator, participate in staff meetings, and complete all required training sessions.
Position Qualifications
- Must be enrolled at Oakland University full-time.
- Must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA.
- Must be in sophomore standing by Fall 2024.
- Must be in good disciplinary standing with the university and University Housing.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of learning strategies, study resources, note-taking techniques, test-taking strategies, and time management.
- Familiarity with academic and campus support services.
- Commitment to equity and inclusion, with the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and identities.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model.
- Those with strong backgrounds in math, biology, and writing preferred.
Compensation and Contract Commitments
- Work approximately 5–10 hours per week during the 2024–2025 academic year, with occasional evening and weekend commitments.
- Compensation starts at $15/hour.
- Attend all paraprofessional training sessions throughout the academic year.
- Participate in biweekly check-in meetings with the DREAM Coordinator.
Work Conditions
This position requires flexibility to accommodate student schedules, including availability during evenings and weekends. Work may be conducted in various settings, including virtual and in-person environments. DREAM Peer Coaches must adhere to program policies, including confidentiality and a professional code of conduct.
