Special Education Supervisor
POSITION GOAL:
A Special Education Supervisor at the St. Joseph County Intermediate School District (SJCISD) is an active member of the education teams in the local school districts. The Special Education Supervisor knows best practices in education research and current state and federal laws. The Special Education Supervisor is a resource to the local district and supports the SJCISD team members in those districts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree and Full approval in at least one area of special education.
- Ability to meet the requirements for Full or Temporary approval as a Special Education Supervisor as required by Rule 340.1772.
- Responsibility of employee to obtain and maintain all training(s), certificate(s), approval(s), etc. and provide documentation to the business office before expiration date of said document(s).
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.
- Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance and the physical ability to do the job.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respond to district principals and parents for any questions or concerns regarding special education.
- Support local district administrators and teachers in problem solving situations with students including special education processes and challenges.
- Support SJCISD staff members working in local district where Special Education Supervisor is assigned. Problem-solve together and provide coaching for staff members.
- Build and foster a positive image of the SJCISD with local district and intermediate district staff and administration
- Assist in developing cross-country systems and processes while honoring the individualization of each local district.
- Build structure of continuous communication with local district administration and SJCISD team members.
- Maintain regular communication with the SJCISD Director regarding celebrations and developing challenges in each local district assigned.
- Consistently demonstrate professional and respectful communication skills.
- Facilitate communication and collaboratively problem-solve to address systematic challenges as they arise.
- Develop strong professional relationships with therapists and frontline staff members in community agencies.
- Build understanding of Special Education System and process within local district teachers and administration.
- Support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support at district level as requested by district or Director.
- Guide implementation of programs and services following state and federal law.
- Provide information to districts regarding Federal and State laws, statutes, regulations and policies regarding special education.
- Provide technical assistance at the request of the district or Director regarding special education processes and reports.
- Lead departments/programs in the identification and hiring process of new staff members.
- Provide coaching for ISD staff in individual areas of needed growth.
- Complete evaluation process for all team members based on schedule defined in union contract or State law.
- Assist ISD team and districts in data collection and analysis.
- Assist in the development of and implementation of corrective action plans as requested by the district or Director.
- Maintain current knowledge of Michigan State Performance Plan indicators.
- Engage in continuous learning of best practices in education.
- Assist in transition process of children with IEPs at the request of the district or Director.
- Serve as a resource to parents/caregivers seeking guidance regarding special education.
- Develop and maintain strong and healthy relationships with local district administration where supervisor is assigned.
- Actively participate in Student Assistant Teams (or appointed designee when necessary) as requested by district or Director.
- Support IEP team through IEP process and attendance as requested by the district or Director.
- Actively participate in SJCISD leadership committees and meetings: Board of Education, Cabinet, Supervisors and others, as requested by the Director.
- Participate in special education staffing meetings to support the development of IEPs or positive behavior intervention plans for children in the district.
- Participate in regular and ad hoc meetings of district administrators as requested/invited by district or Director to ensure alignment with district vision.
- Participate in trainings provided by district to ensure alignment with district vision.
- Participate in special education meetings with district administration as scheduled by district.
- Strategically utilize SJCISD resources for team professional development, supplies and mileage.
- May need to sub in the classroom, in the event there is no teacher or substitute teacher available.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education.
