Cytotechnician

 Qualifications:

  • ASCP certification is mandatory
  • Must have a current passing grade of an annual cytotechnologist proficiency test
  • Training and proficient with Hologic Thin Prep Imaging System

 Procedural Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for using clinical history and other patient information in arriving at the proper diagnosis for each cytologic specimen
  • Examine cytology specimens for the presence of abnormal cellular changes and pathogens
  • Sign out all negative gynecologic cases
  • Report other cytologic findings, such as the presence of microorganisms endocervical component
  • Evaluate and mark GYN (reactive and reparative, abnormal, questionable or negative)
  • Submit reactive and reparative, abnormal and questionable GYN cases to a pathologist for final evaluation
  • Record the results of each GYN slide read on the appropriate form/systems/etc. used in the laboratory, in a legible manner
  • Submit daily workload of negative GYN cases for a minimum of 10% quality control review (including random high-risk cases) by a supervisory qualified cytotechnologist.   
  • Maintain appropriate records
  • Maintain compliance with workload limits
  • Maintain microscope in excellent working condition
  • Participate in continuing education in areas relating to Cytology
