Communications and Marketing Intern

The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office is offering a paid, in-person, undergraduate internship for Summer 2025. The internship requires 20-40 hours of on-site work and is available to be applied for college credit.

 

We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and committed intern to join our Communications Department. This internship provides a unique opportunity to participate in public information campaigns and election-related activities. The Communications and/or Marketing Intern will support the Communications team on strategy, development, and management of social media channels, the creation of press materials, and support special projects such as Honor a Veteran and #SmallBizSalute.

 

About the Office of the Iowa Secretary of State

The Office of the Iowa Secretary of State (SOS) has three primary areas of responsibility: 1) Elections & Voter Registration, 2) Business Services, and 3) Safe at Home. The Elections Division provides oversight of election administration and voter registration duties conducted by county elections officials. The Business Services Division accepts filings related to business entities, notaries, and other related activities. Safe at Home is an address confidentiality program for survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. In addition to these three functional areas, the SOS has financial, IT, and communications teams that provide officewide support.

 

SOS interns enhance their writing skills, polish their speaking skills, and become prepared for the real-world experience after college.

 

The job duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Graphic design with Canva or other graphic design software
  • Video editing with Canva or other editing program
  • Drafting press releases and other media materials
  • Media list building
  • Design and development of promotional assets
  • Strategy and execution of social media channels including Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
  • Staffing support of Secretary of State and other members of leadership
  • Support with election-related activities as applicable
  • Supporting the Honor a Veteran program and managing corresponding social channels and website
  • Working with small businesses across Iowa on the #SmallBizSalute social media campaign

 

Qualifications

  • Enrolled full‐time at an accredited university, working toward a degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Political Science, Public Policy or a related field
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and adapt quickly
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software and Canva desired
