JOB TITLE: Mariachi Teacher/Director
REPORTS TO: Director of Performing and Visual Arts
STATUS: Exempt
PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale + $8000 Mariachi Director Stipend
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Mariachi Director will instruct the mariachi classes at both the middle school and high school campuses with identified mariachi programs. They will plan and implement a comprehensive instructional program for students at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of mariachi ensemble and provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular music activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and district requirements.
The Mariachi Director will coordinate, supervise, and manage all aspects of the mariachi program including items related to inventory, budget, travel and managing the curricular and instructional delivery. They will plan activities to achieve district, regional, and state recognition. Assure high levels of engagement, achievement and learning for all fine arts students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in music education or music performance from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teacher’s certification
- Three years of successful job-related experience in teaching mariachi
Preferred:
- Master’s degree from a recognized, accredited college or university
- Ten or more years of successfully leading and growing a mariachi program
- Demonstrated evidence of strong classroom engagement and management
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Pedagogical knowledge to instruct voice and all the instruments of the mariachi ensemble
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues on the campus and in the instructional feeder pattern
- Ability to market and grow the instructional program
- Knowledge of overall operation of secondary performing arts programs
- Knowledge of state and local policies governing fine arts and extra-curricular activities
- Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Design and implement successful teaching strategies for a middle school and high school mariachi program.
- Design and implement a mariachi program which successfully participates in UIL/TMEA and other mariachi contests, as well as performances within the district, school and community.
- Plan and supervise assignments of private lesson/master class teachers and volunteer(s).
- Maintain accurate mariachi equipment inventory, budget, maintenance, and general operation of all activities.
- Work cooperatively with other performing and visual arts teachers in supporting all district performing and visual arts programs.
- Support and organize student travel plans and budgets associated with competitions and/or conventions as directed.
- Actively coordinate the efforts of parent support.
- Coordinate campus mariachi activities with campus programs, staff, and community.
- Actively participates in the professional development of personal teaching competencies.
- Participates in professional organizations which foster and support music education.
- Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
