The Student Nurse Extern- Level II is responsible for providing health care to patients working closely with members of the health care team collecting data and implementing patient care. The SNE will function under the discretion of an RN mentor where s/he is able to participate in the coordination and provision of individualized, quality patient care based on the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Additionally, the SNE will have periodic, designated observation opportunities with a designated RN in specialty areas to experience different nursing career path opportunities.

The Student Nurse Extern II Program is for nursing students Currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program having successfully completed junior year and entering senior year of nursing program.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follows treatment plan as directed by licensed personnel.
Performs the following tasks as assigned: (a.) Vital signs, (b.) Intake and output measurements, (c.) Glucometry, (d.) Specimen collection, (e.) Patient ADLs (bathing, oral care, toileting, feeding, mobility/ambulation, etc.), (f.) Restocking supplies; checking and/or cleaning equipment.
Assists with the admitting process and documents on admission database as appropriate.
Performs necessary functions to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction with service.
Accepts responsibility for providing safe, appropriate, quality patient care.
Communicates changes in patients’ conditions to the RN.
Documentation for all assigned responsibilities
Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs as appropriate.
Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.
Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
Additionally, the Student Nurse Extern-Level II will:
Assists the RN to perform in-depth, systematic assessment of all assigned patients.
Assists the RN to formulate a collaborative plan of care and identifying expected patient outcomes.
Assists the RN to implement, evaluate, and document patient care interventions and effectiveness in accordance with the care plan.
Assists the RN to organize, coordinate, and prioritize patient care consistently utilizing available resources.
Assists with set-up and clean-up of procedures.
Observes the administration of medications by the RN. The SNE will complete a medication administration form on patients. The SNE will evaluate comprehension of pharmacology and its relation to specific patients.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Stands for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walks 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Sits up to 7 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Consistently lifts, carries, and pushes objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts, carries, and pushes objects up to 75 lbs. Transports patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoops and bends. Frequently reaches above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
EDUCATION:
High School graduate or equivalent. Currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program having successfully completed junior year (two written instructor references) and entering senior year of nursing program.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Current BLS/CPR certification. Attends St Luke’s University Health Network orientation for this position. Must have ability to read, write and understand English.
