Controller - Affordable Housing

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead our accounting functions in a non-profit low-income housing organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with organizational policies, internal procedures, and GAAP, as well as preparing and presenting financial information to management. The Controller will also oversee personnel record keeping, manage tasks within finance, and develop financial statements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Direct and oversee the organization’s financial operations, including the maintenance of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems.
• Ensure compliance with US GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards, including financial reporting for all regulatory and partnership agreements.
• Develop and maintain policies and procedures for financial recordkeeping and reporting to uphold internal controls and safeguards for all accounts.
• Direct the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and consolidated financial statements, ensuring inter-entity reconciliation and compliance with accounting controls.
• Review financial plans against actual results, identifying variances and providing corrective action recommendations as necessary.
• Lead all audit and tax preparation activities, managing relationships with external auditors and vendors.
• Support the Executive Director in engaging the Board and related committees regarding audit results, financial performance, and budgeting processes.
• Oversee treasury functions and cash management, ensuring effective cash flow and banking relationships.
• Administer the implementation of new accounting technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
• Manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team, clarifying roles and responsibilities to optimize performance.
• Develop and implement training programs to support team growth in alignment with the organization’s core values.
• Strengthen internal communications and foster a positive work environment throughout the organization.
• Ensure effective internal controls and compliance with financial regulations, including the management of financial record-keeping, reporting, and cash management.
• Facilitate external audits and prepare necessary state and federal tax returns.
• Report accidents and maintain compliance with government agency requirements.
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate accounting department staff as needed.
• Fulfill special assignments as required by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting from an accredited university.
• A minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant leadership roles as a Controller or Senior Accounting Officer.
• Experience in the affordable housing or real estate industry is preferred.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is preferred.
• Proficiency in financial software (Yardi) and Excel for financial modeling.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with strong supervisory and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
• Commitment to serving diverse communities and understanding of low-income housing issues.
• Ability to work effectively in project teams and with individuals from various backgrounds.
• Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
