Gift Shop Coordinator

Description: The Gift Shop Coordinator will assist the Gift Shop Retail Manager (GSM) to represent the retail function of the Gift Shop, and will assume the role of the Gift Shop Manager in his or her absence. The Gift Shop Coordinator will need to understand current & future garden exhibitions, programs, and activities to identify appropriate retail sales opportunities, while also helping to motivate staff with a positive work environment. Shifts are 8 hours, fluctuating between 9:00am-7:00pm during the summer months and 9:00am-9:00pm in the Autumn & Winter seasons for our Dominion Energy Garden of Lights event. This position requires flexible availability; weekend availability is required.

Essential Functions: 

  • Assist GSM in carrying out supervisory responsibilities involving loss prevention, physical inventory, proper cash management, merchandising, customer service and any other duties pertaining to day-to-day operations.
  • Work with the GSM to assist managing daily store operations including opening, closing and reporting procedures, ensuring timely and accurate deposits are made each evening, and ensuring proper coverage for the sales floor staff.
  • Help the GSM to establish & maintain accurate records of positive, professional working relationships with vendors while negotiating the best possible price consistent with delivery, quality, reliability and service.
  • Assist GSM with researching new product lines, making recommendations and purchasing an appropriate mix of merchandise to maximize sales generation for the Gift Shop.
  • Ensure visual standards are maintained throughout the entire Gift Shop by creating & sustaining displays to increase sales, and to create a pleasant and safe shopping experience.
  • Obtain and share knowledge of merchandise with sales associates and customers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Physical Functions: 

  • Standing, walking, and/or moving through store for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to utilize a computer, answer phones, and have basic knowledge of email and internet use.
  • Receiving and stocking inventory requires bending, lifting up to 35 pounds, kneeling, reaching overhead, moving boxes and store inventory for off-site sales.
  • Must be able to use a broom, dust mop and vacuum cleaner. 
  • Ability to participate in routine conversation in person and via telephone. 
  • Some outdoor labor required for garden patio, such as general straightening and cleaning.

Requirements:

  • Must be able to reliably commute to and from the Garden. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to speak effectively with both individuals and groups.
  • Availability to work weekends. 

Education & Experience: 

  • Minimum of one to two years of previous work experience in a retail environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of point-of-sale systems preferred.
  • Degree in Management, Business, Marketing or a related field preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Altru software specifically is a plus.
