Recreation Program Manager

Primary Purpose

This position performs professional level work in coordinating and directing instructional classes, special events, camps, athletics, Special Olympics programs and Senior Games activities.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates and oversees the Neuse River Senior Games.
  • Coordinates with Senior Games committee to schedule, staff and run a six county Senior Games program.
  • Coordinates and oversees adult and youth athletic leagues, including basketball, softball and kickball.
  • Coordinates and oversees adult and youth athletic camps, including baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and golf.
  • Serves as a liaison with officials' associations to coordinate game schedules, rainouts and tournament schedules.
  • Schedules and supervises instructional classes. Works with instructors on scheduling classes and camps.
  • Prepares and recommends budget items for equipment, supplies and personnel for review by the recreation director.
  • Works with individuals and groups in determining recreational needs and establishing programs to meet those needs.
  • Requests and secures facilities for programs including schools.
  • Coordinates and oversees fundraisers for the Neuse River Senior Games.
  • Works with program staff on additional events and programs to include Special Olympics and additional special events as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Position requires graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation or a related field. Some experience in recreation work preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Possession of valid North Carolina driver's license is required. 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of athletic rules and equipment
  • Working knowledge of a wide variety of activities and leisure pursuits
  • Ability to plan and supervise the activities required to execute assigned recreational programs
  • Ability to supervise the work of volunteer and part-time recreation personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other agencies involved.

Additional Information

Performs related work as required.
May be required to serve during times of disaster.
