Job Summary

 

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire one (1) Natural Resources Supervisor 4/Unit Supervisor at Gooseberry Falls State Park.  As Unit Supervisor, this position exists to direct and administer the Department of Natural Resources' and the Division of Parks and Trails programs, activities, policies, budgets, and rules at Gooseberry Falls State Park and Flood Bay Wayside Rest Area.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Exercise authority so that applicable labor agreements and plans are equitably administered and employees under the supervisor’s jurisdiction effectively perform assigned job duties to achieve program, work plan, unit and section objectives. 
  • Provide administrative oversight of fiscal management, planning, policy development, and grant administration, in collaboration with others as needed, to accomplish agency and division goals and objectives, and comply with rules and guidelines. 
  • Direct enforcement and emergency services activities to protect resources, facilities, visitors and staff; and ensure state, agency, Department, and Division rules are followed.
  • Direct visitor services and public relations activities to ensure positive visitor experiences, promote positive public relations; inform the public and others about Division activities and goals.
  • In collaboration with others as appropriate, develop, direct and evaluate implementation of resource management programs so that natural communities and cultural resources are restored, protected, or rehabilitated consistent with statewide and regional objectives and requirements.
  • Direct design and administration of development, maintenance, operational, real estate, and rehabilitation activities and programs so that safe, high quality facilities and programs are available to the public, natural and cultural resources are preserved and protected, and programs/facilities comply with relevant standards and state codes.
  • Establish and nurture internal and external partnerships with private citizens, private business, interest groups, local divisions of government or other government agencies to advance the priorities of the Division and DNR. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Current (ONE YEAR) experience as a Natural Resources Supervisor 4 – Parks

OR

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Natural Resources Management, Parks and Recreation, Natural Science, Communications, public relations, business management, political science, public administration, social science, education, interpretation, or closely related field and THREE YEARS professional level experience in a natural resources setting, agency or organization; including budget development and fiscal management, work planning and partnership and visitor management experience and THREE YEARS of supervisory experience in a governmental agency, or in a natural resource setting, organization or agency. 

 AND

  • Conflict resolution skills/experience
  • Writing skills sufficient to communicate work plans, proposals, and reports.
  • Communication skills sufficient to communicate work requirements to individuals and groups.
  • Organizational and administrative skills sufficient to organize diverse elements or work and perform tasks within administrative requirements.
  • Project management skills sufficient to ensure projects are organized, tracked and completed on a timely basis.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively and uphold the culture of respect.
  • Fiscal skills sufficient to administer budgets and track expenditures and/or income.
  • Ability to comprehend laws, rules, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of natural and cultural resource requirements, including interpretive programs.
  • Understanding of safety requirements as they relate to working with a variety of equipment and machinery.
  • Word processing skills sufficient to draft memos, letters, etc.
  • Spreadsheet skills sufficient to create, modify and manipulate spreadsheet data.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of vehicles, shop, and office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with multicultural communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing complex budgets with fund integrity, setting operational work goals, and managing geographically large operations in a diverse and fast-paced environment that includes collaboration with subordinates and other staff.
  • Three or more years of direct supervisory experience equivalent to a Natural Resources Parks and Trails Supervisor 2 or Supervisor 3.
  • Experience with managing and responding to emergency situations.
  • Successful completion of leadership and/or supervisory training offered by the DNR or comparable programs.
  • Experience in natural resource management and ecological restoration.
  • Extensive experience planning, leading, and implementing a successful employee safety program.
  • Experience with sustainable trail building.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
