Multi-semester Internship

The Multi-semester Collegiate Internship Program at Parkland Health & Hospital System provides emerging professionals with practical skills, an operational relationship network, and real-world experience to prepare them to assume future positions within the health care industry.

Workforce Development, along with onsite functional supervisors, mentor and develop participants to be future Parkland employees through experiential education. The opportunity provides practical work experience, embedded in the hospital system, while enhancing the individual’s professional competencies and knowledge.

Each intern completes a strategically aligned major project gaining educational experience in their fields of study while also contributing to Parkland’s mission. Students also participate in enrichment activities, operational tours, workshops, lectures and career advisement arranged by Workforce Development. Interns can expect to utilize their education and leverage the resources of a large, integrated health care organization during their internship, helping to set them up for future success.

Intern Experience

Parkland interns can make a notable impact on the Parkland system and receive valuable experience learning in a clinical environment. Past interns have:

• Created a nationally recognized video highlighting the importance of proper hand hygiene.
• Completed a research paper on the impact of executive coaching and how to measure coaching effectiveness for all of Parkland Academy to reference. Based on the research, then created a series of coaching effectiveness measurements and assessments.
• Coordinated an employee engagement event for the We Versus Me Farm,
• Improved processing in the cardiac outpatient clinic by: assisting in patient check in, bettering satisfaction in the waiting room, and translating directions to patients who speak only Spanish
• Helped the Labor & Delivery Surgical Services Unit become prepared for the Joint Commission Survey
• Observed in a clinical setting for the very first time and learned medical terms and practices as well as learned how to interpret patient boards.
• Organized the Faith Health program so that there are more central locations for data as well as uniform operational processes.
• Rounded in the Surgical ICU with a resident and attending physicians.

Eligibility Requirements

• Primary/permanent residence is preferred to be in Dallas County, or surrounding DFW area.
• Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited university fulfilling upper-level undergraduate courses, with completion of at least 90 credit hours, or
• Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited university.
• Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Must be legally permitted to work in the United States of America
• Must be interested in utilizing your career field within the health care industry
• Applicants must be willing to complete a 12-month internship experience, beginning mid-January until December
• Must be enrolled as a student during the entire 12 month internship experience
