The Work You Will Do:

The Planner I position performs work under the direction of the Environmental Administrator for the Division of Waste Management, Waste Reduction & Recycling Program located in Tallahassee, Florida.  The ideal candidate will possess discipline-specific knowledge, independent decision-making responsibility and technical skills to advance waste reduction and recycling throughout the state.   

 

This position requires a self-motivated individual who can work independently in management of the collection, review and analysis of recycling data provided by the public and private sector.  This position requires contact with the public, applicants, Department and other governmental officials.  This position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week.

The Planner I works with technical and professional personnel, environmental consultants, interested parties and the public to advance recycling throughout the state.  The consultant works closely with the public and industry to provide guidance and technical assistance within state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.  This role is critical for the agency in meeting the 75% recycling goal established in 403.7032, Florida Statutes.

Pay:

$33,760.00 - $43,698.96/annually (Commensurate with experience)

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • This position is located in the Waste Reduction and Registration section and requires contact with the public, applicants, Department and other governmental officials.
  • Will conduct organizational studies and evaluations on office procedures providing technical assistance and developing procedures to assist the program to operate more efficiently and effectively.
  • Assists the Reduction and Registration Administrator in initiating, planning, executing and monitoring progress of recycling efforts around the state.
  • Assists in the collection, review, and analysis of Annual Solid Waste Management and Recycling Reports from counties. Assists in coordinating, updating and revising of the online data collection system with the system developers, as needed.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to county recycling coordinators to assure compliance with rules for preparing and submitting their reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of periodic reports to the Legislature about the status of recycling in the state.
  • Provides coordination and technical assistance to the public, other government agencies, and the private sector on issues related to recycling and waste reduction.
  • Assists in the activities of recycling education development.
  • Participates in rule development activities and provides expertise related to recycling requirements and recovered materials.
  • Represent the department at public meetings, information requests and workshops.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of solid waste and recycling management practices and principles.
  • Skilled in developing and/or managing projects.
  • Skilled in usage of personal computer software (Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with other agencies, public officials, private organizations, and the general public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to organize and complete work assignments under pressure, and work independently.
  • Ability to understand, and apply applicable rules, policies and technical data.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight trips.
  • Ability to learn computer software programs.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.

 

Required or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of two years.
  • Preferred: One-year professional solid waste & recycling experience.
