Purpose Statement: The job of the Special Area Teacher (Art, P.E., Dance/Theater, Music, Band, STEM) is done for the purpose of providing support to the educational process by developing students' appreciation and skills in various content areas; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, staff, and administrators to address instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress. The Special Area Teacher will also travel to multiple sites within the district to ensure equitable access to all special areas across the student population.

Essential Functions:
· Administers assessments for the purpose of ensuring students meet district learning standards.
· Advises parents/guardians of student progress to communicate achievements, methods for improvement, and reinforce classroom goals.
· Assesses student progress towards learning objectives and goals to improve performance in art, P.E., dance/theater, music, band, and STEM skills.
· Monitors student progress by circulating through the classroom and managing student behavior to ensure conformance with school standards.
· Collaborates with instructional staff, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes, ensure effective communication, and achieve established classroom objectives.
· Develops curriculum and lesson plans aligned with state standards for each content area to create a foundation for student learning and achievement.
· Maintains equipment and supplies necessary for instruction in content areas such as art materials, musical instruments, and STEM tools.
· Instructs students in specialized techniques, appreciation, and understanding of art, physical movement, creative expression, music, and STEM principles to build foundational knowledge and skills.
· Travels to multiple school sites to deliver special area instruction, ensuring that all students in the district have equitable access to a high-quality education in the arts, physical education, music, and STEM.
· Manages classroom behavior to ensure a safe learning environment.
· Participates in professional development and meetings to stay current with educational trends and instructional techniques.
· Plans student events such as exhibitions, recitals, performances, or competitions to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate learning.
· Reports incidents of concern, such as suspected child abuse or substance abuse, to maintain student safety and adhere to school policies.
· Prepares written materials such as student grades and progress reports to document achievement and meet mandated requirements.

· Performs other duties as assigned for the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
· Skills: Proficiency in the relevant subject area(s), use of assessment instruments, standard office equipment, and maintaining accurate records.
· Knowledge: Age-appropriate activities, curriculum standards, lesson planning, child development stages, and behavioral management strategies.
· Abilities: Work with diverse groups, schedule and organize activities, analyze issues, problem-solve, and operate equipment. Ability to manage time effectively and adjust to the varying needs of multiple school sites.

Responsibility: Responsibilities include working under limited supervision, managing small work units, and possibly overseeing budgets. Collaboration with other departments may be required. Travel between sites is essential to ensure all students across the district have access to specialized content areas.

Work Environment: The role requires physical activity such as lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and fine motor skills. Travel to multiple school sites is required. The job environment is generally hazard-free with minimal temperature variation.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area. Enrollment in an Educator Prep Program with Alternative Teaching Certificate may be necessary depending on content area.
