Post-Masters RA – Chemical/Environmental Engineering (9970)

Overview
The Fundamental & Biogeochemistry Team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is soliciting applications for a Post-Masters Research Associate to conduct field and laboratory studies aimed at understanding emerging technologies for carbon dioxide removal from terrestrial and marine settings. The successful candidate will join a team of scientists and engineers with a broad range of interests and expertise. The primary focus of this position will be the evaluation of CO2 mineralization pathways across terrestrial and marine settings.  The position will be based at the PNNL Seattle campus in Seattle, WA.

Responsibilities

  • Understanding of decarbonization and carbon removal technologies.
  • Candidate should be able to calculate and interpret material and energy balances and life-cycle inventories.
  • Candidate should be able to interpret results from technoeconomic and life-cycle assessments.
  • Experience with indoor laboratory experiments (e.g., mineralization rates and kinetics etc.)
  • Ability to plan and execute field measurements and experimental installations. 
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of routine research equipment (sensors, pumps, power supplies etc.).
  • Ability to interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff within and beyond the immediate research group.
  • Experience with presenting research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, or related field.
  • Knowledgeable with chemical laboratory environments and understands materials characterization techniques (XRD, EDS, XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman etc.).
  • Some experience with electronics hardware assembly, calibration, and operation to meet project-specific needs.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of control, processing, and analysis software (Python, C++, G/M-code, ladder logic, scripting in Labview / Matlab / Mathematica/Aspen Plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to both work independently and in collaborative teams.
  • Able and willing to work independently in both the PNNL laboratory, field, and offsite environments.
  • Capability to learn, implement, and compliantly execute the broad range of systems (safety, quality, procurement, etc.) necessary to complete project tasks.
  • Able to accommodate a dynamic and potentially varying work schedule, depending on project needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to engage with external partners and collaborators.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
