Think you have an idea of what a police officer does and how they are supported in 2024? Well, you might be surprised – read on!

The Chesterfield County Police Department (CCPD) is regarded as one of the nation’s premier police departments. We do not settle for status quo – we are forward-thinking and constantly innovating. As one of our team members, here’s what you can expect and enjoy:

Chesterfield County police officers (550+) and professional staff (150+) humbly serve a growing population (est. 375,000+) covering 437 square miles in stunning Chesterfield County – a first choice community for residents, businesses, and visitors in which to live, work, raise a family and play.

We exist as a police department for four main reasons: (1) protect the vulnerable, (2) preserve life, (3) engage in problem-solving partnerships, and (4) attract, train, and retain top-tier talent.

We seek to hire, train, retain, and promote members who embody three main virtues: humble (humility), hungry (strong work ethic), and smart (emotional intelligence). These virtues are the characteristics that exemplify an ideal team player. Even while upholding lofty customer service standards and expectations, we remain a proactive police department that earnestly enforces the law to keep our community safe. Not only do we have the support of our local government, but we also share an exceptionally supportive relationship with our community. We are blessed – community members regularly hold law enforcement appreciation events in gratitude for our service. Our First Responder Appreciation Day, sponsored by Chesterfield Gives Back, is an annual celebration where the Chesterfield community, in unmatched fashion, shows its unwavering support and appreciation for our public safety teams and our families.

Such recognition and support has caught the eye of police officers across the state and the nation. We are always looking for top-tier talent. In the last 6 years, we have attracted and hired 49 certified police officers from 25 different departments. We are seen as their destination police department. We offer an attractive benefits package and a fully funded public safety pay plan. In addition to regular promotional opportunities, we offer 30+ specialty assignments. Lateral officers are competitively compensated commensurate to similarly tenured incumbent personnel. Recruit salary is $60,147.

At the Chesterfield County Police Department, we are committed to helping you continuously develop during your career. Initiatives focusing on your career development, leadership skills, and overall wellness are offered and stressed at all positions in the department. We have professional staff on-site committed solely to ensuring your career with our department is one of great personal and professional growth and satisfaction – providing world class opportunities for training and development is of utmost importance to the CCPD. We want to help you to be the best version of yourself for you, your family, and the community you will have the distinct honor and privilege to serve.

CCPD is an award-winning agency, recently garnering honors from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) for successful recruitment and retention efforts and organizational culture. At the CCPD, our members, sworn and professional staff alike, commit themselves to providing exceptional customer service – think Ritz-Carlton.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and its Destination Zero program nationally recognized our department as the 2022 Comprehensive Safety Winner, which highlighted our comprehensive safety and wellness programs. Destination Zero Award Video

Chesterfield is a place of incredible beauty - there is so much to see and do. With the James and Appomattox rivers forming much of its borders, there are countless opportunities for boating and fishing. The county is the location of Pocahontas State Park, which is rated among the top 10 campsites in the country. The county provides more than 4,000 acres of green space among its 60 public parks, and numerous athletic complexes make it an ideal host for sports events and tournaments. What’s more, the public school system is nationally recognized for its exceptional standards of excellence. Chesterfield County’s central location is just south of Virginia’s capital, Richmond, and is convenient to interstates 95 and 64, making it ideally situated within two hours from the beaches, the mountains, and our nation’s capital.

If you are a Chesterfield County resident, you can take pride in the recognition we have already received, such as "The 17th Best Place to Live in America," "One of the 100 Best Communities in America for Young People," the lowest crime rate in the Richmond Metropolitan region, and many other kudos. Providing community members with the best possible quality of life is the main mission of our local government and the CCPD is committed to doing its part to carry out that mission.
