Operations Assistant - Winter Break
Wage Range: $10.45 (Regular) - $15.00 (For Special Events)
Position Summary:
The Operations Assistant is responsible for monitoring patron access to the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC), overseeing equipment rentals, maintaining a safe environment, having working knowledge of the proper use of free weights, cardiovascular equipment and selectorized machines, enforce policies and procedures of the exercise floor as well as the SRWC, take an active role in the daily maintenance and cleanliness of the SRWC, and displaying positive customer service skills at all times including when maintaining responsibilities at the front desk, court, or facility areas.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrate strong customer service to all patrons at all times.
2. Be familiar with the SRWC Building Emergency Response Protocol (BERP), respond and report as required, and display confidence in the implementation of each protocol and procedure.
3. Monitor facility usage, events, and activities and ensure the SRWC is a safe and clean environment for all patrons.
4. Monitor patron flow in and out of the facilities including proper check in procedures.
5. Oversee all daily equipment rentals.
6. Follow the equipment reporting policy for all equipment irregularities, including any that are standard maintenance and repair.
7. Assist with game rotation on courts.
8. Support day-to-day operations and event set-up/tear-down.
9. Become proficient in and enforce all policies, procedures, guidelines and rules of the SRWC in a firm, fair and consistent manner when applicable.
Customer service is never compromised when doing this.
10. Adhere to all University of Akron and SRWC policies.
11. Maintain positive communication skills with all peers, superiors, and employees.
12. Provide feedback in a constructive manner and document any concerns for supervisors.
13. Engage students in a manner that enhances their ability to be successful, adding to the campus experience, and representing The University of Akron to the highest standards.
14. Complete all virtual trainings by deadlines and attend staff meetings and training classes. Assist in staff training through direct instruction and/or participation.
15. Display proficiency in the operation of basic computer skills as well as CSI, Connect2, WhenToWork, and Microsoft Teams software.
16. May provide individual guidance and backup support to unit staff as required.
17. Circulating on the exercise floor (including the Track and Lounge area) in an effort to assist any guests or members with questions or exercise issues they may have.
18. The Fitness Leader needs to initiate appropriate assistance and instruction with members and/or guests if they appear to need assistance or if they are endangering themselves or others.
19. Follow the regular cleaning and preventive maintenance inspection program. All equipment needs to be inspected and cleaned at least weekly.
20. Demonstrate confidence and familiarity with all exercise floor equipment. Perform equipment orientations for members regarding free weights, cardiovascular equipment and selectorized machines.
21. Assist in the development and implementation of member exercise incentive programs to motivate and enhance participation. Maintain current knowledge on and encourage participation in all SRWC programs, services, and activities.
22. Perform daily operational tasks in a timely and proficient manner as directed.
23. Show up for all assigned shifts on time and in uniform.
24. Obtain and maintain required First Aid/CPR/AED certification(s) as instructed.
25. Assume all other duties and projects assigned.
Required Qualifications:
1. Basic computer operational skills
2. Excellent communication and customer service skills required
3. Organizational and management skills as they relate to writing reports and completing paperwork
4. A strong working knowledge and understanding of Student Recreational & Wellness Services (SRWS) departmental policies and procedures
5. Successful completion training program (upon hiring)
6. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (can be attained upon employment)
7. Ability to be punctual and work variable hours necessary
8. Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times
9. Scheduled hours: Approximately 8 – 25 hours per week
10. Must be at least enrolled as a half-time student at The University of Akron for the duration of the semester in which you are employed
- 6+ credit hours for undergraduate students
- 5+ credit hours for graduate students
11. Cannot exceed 29 hours of on-campus work each week (20 hours for International Students)
Preferred in one or more of the following:
- Preferred major in exercise science or other health related field
- Previous fitness related employment (gyms, rec centers, etc.)
- Previous experience in supervising staff
- Currently holds any nationally recognized fitness related certification or ability to obtain (Personal Training, Group Instruction, etc.)
