Soil Erosion Agent

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to assist Soil Erosion Agent II in inspections of earth change sites under Part 91 permit. Review and permit earth change activities. Drain and drain basin maintenance - physical clearing, surveying, and removal of beaver dams. Assist the Drain Commissioner in monitoring water levels and maintaining County-held dams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs on-site inspections to examine conditions and soil erosion control measures.
  • Performs maintenance on drains and basins; clears debris, cuts brush, and digs out culverts.
  • Inspect permitted sites, document violations to Michigan's Part 91 program, and facilitate compliance with applicable laws.
  • Monitors water levels, tracks flow and communicates with surrounding areas.
  • Meets with Township officials, building inspectors, and road agencies to explain the law's provisions and encourage support for permit issuance and compliance.
  • Prepares reports and letters and maintains files according to legal requirements.
  • Assists with other operations of the Soil Erosion Control Program and the Drain Commissioner's Office.
  • Provides guidance regarding proper installation, maintenance, and removal of erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Performs drain and basin maintenance, including removal of obstructions to flow. 
  • Performs water level monitoring and maintenance.
  • Provides education on the Part 91 State law and its purpose.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • At least two years of relevant college-level course work or an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of related work experience with environmental issues related to erosion and sedimentation. 
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
