Your Role

The Activity Center Assistant Leader or The Activity Center Leader  duties will include, but not be limited to:

 Planning, programming and leading age-appropriate activities for 5-12 year olds in a recreation setting

 Supervision of children

 Planning programs includes but is not limited to games, sports, arts and crafts, and special events.

 Assisting the Activity Center Leader with site supervision, discipline and all other aspects of programming

Some locations may require additional experience or qualifications

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Note: In addition to the above roles, The Activity Center Leader ($19.53) will provide supervision, mentoring and coaching to part time employees, volunteer and interns.

 

This position may be filled as an Activity Center Leader ($19.53 per hour) or Activity Center Assistant Leader ($17.94 per hour). Determination based on demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and position availability.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: High school or GED, 18 years old or older, plus three (3) months or at least 400 hours of related experience including programming and experience with individuals with special needs in such positions as personal assistant/attendant, youth leader, mentor, camp counselor, teacher/substitute, coach, recreation program leader, church youth leader, scout leader, or child care provider, either in a paid or volunteer capacity; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some positions may require a valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. As a condition of employment, all new employees must have a criminal history record investigation, take a TB Screening, and attend mandatory trainings.

Special Instructions:

As a condition of employment, all Out-of-School time employees must complete P&R Connection (Department Orientation) and OST New Employee Orientation. This is a 4-day classroom training scheduled from Friday- Wednesday. If selected for the position, you will be provided your training dates and times at the time of hire. P&R Connection is held every other Friday from 8:30-5:00pm. The remaining days start at 12:00pm and end by 6:15pm. Additional on site training takes place after completion of the classroom portions.

During the school year, employees must be available to work five days a week, Monday – Friday – primarily 2:20pm – 6:15pm. If during employment, someone is no longer available five days, they may be moved to a sub list.

Average scheduled hours up to 27 hours per week. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays. Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
