Community Volunteer Ambassador - Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Position Title:  Community Volunteer Ambassador – Whiskeytown National Recreation Area - AmeriCorps 

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements 

Site Location:  Whiskeytown, CA

Terms of Service: 

Start Date: Tuesday, January 21, 2025 

End Date: Friday, December 19, 2025 

AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hour  

 

Purpose: 

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.  

  

This Climate CVA position at Whiskeytown will play an integral role in further professionalizing and expanding the park-wide volunteer program.  

  

Site Description  

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was established in 1965 to protect Whiskeytown Lake and surrounding habitat and to provide outdoor recreation opportunities for the people of the United States. The park protects an immensity of over 1100 different native plant species and preserves historic sites associated with the Wintu People and California Gold Rush. Whiskeytown is visited by around one million people each year. Visitors primarily enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. The vast majority of the park has been restored and reopened from the 2018 Carr Fire which burned 97% of the national recreation area and destroyed over 100 structures.   

  

Whiskeytown has volunteers that help support the park's ranger-led kayak and stand-up paddleboard programs, staff the Visitor Center, conduct living history interpretation, remove invasive plants, and maintain trails. The park also hosts several volunteer groups each year.  

Description of Duties: 

Spearhead a monthly trail restoration volunteer day program to help clear park trails as quickly as possible.  

Expand the number of interpretive volunteers at Tower House Historic District to help deter illegal activity and increase visitor appreciation of the site.  

Increase the number of natural resource management volunteers focused within the following fields: invasive plant removal, native plant propagation, water quality monitoring, weather station recording, etc.  

As a paid staff member, participate in at least one outside-the-park community volunteer event per month to promote a positive public image of the park in the community.  

Coordinate and facilitate at least six large volunteer events.  

Table at approximately 15 community events and provide information to the public about the park and its volunteer opportunities.  

Serve as the park's primary spokesperson and champion of volunteers and volunteer opportunities.  

Research, write, and publish a once-a-month volunteer newsletter to keep park volunteers abreast of park happenings.  

Qualifications: 

Must be friendly and must work well with others.  

Must be able to hike on strenuous trails up to five miles and carry a heavy backpack with gear at the same time.  

Must be okay with working in the heat and in the outdoors.  

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien 

Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award  

Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.  

Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in March 2025 (date TBD) 

Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 

Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position 

Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 

 

 Preferred Qualifications:  

First Aid, CPR, AED.  

The candidate should be comfortable with public speaking.

Time Requirements: 

This position is expected to serve a 40-hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary and will be set by host site.  

Lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service hours.  

Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term. 

Orientation and Training: 

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. 

Week-long, in-person training on NPS volunteer program management and leadership skills. 

Year-long continuum of learning supporting professional development 

$1,200 in Professional Development Funds   

  

Additional Information:  

The Climate CVA will work weekends on either a Tuesday through Saturday or Wednesday through Sunday schedule.  

Housing will be provided. You will have your own bedroom in a house or apartment with shared kitchen, living room, and bathroom. House has internet, smart TV, and washer/dryer.  

Benefits:  

Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395 

Living Allowance of $600 per week. 

Additional Benefit of $150 per week, if housing is not provided.

Evaluation and Reporting: 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
