Operating Engineering/Roadhouse

Essential Role Functions

  • Operational and functional checks — be able to start and operate central and individual plants, systems and equipment, and check for proper operation of fault and emergency systems. Must be able to read, understand, and follow checklists to safely operate the system or equipment and know what actions to take in case of equipment failure or during emergency conditions.
  • Troubleshoot systems/equipment — must clearly understand how each individual plant's system or equipment operates to be able to identify and evaluate causes of malfunction or failure. Ability to read blueprints and schematics, diagrams, and troubleshooting procedures; use of monitoring devices and craft specified tools as necessary.
  • Installation, maintenance, or repair of systems and equipment — accept technical direction from in-house and engineering sources and conduct and implement required actions.
  • Disassembly of system components — utilize hand and power operated tools, use hand and arm movements such as power grip, lifting above and below the waist, bending, stooping, standing, crouching, and reaching.
  • Assembly of system components — utilize hand and power operated tools to assemble system components per blueprints and/or engineering drawings. Generally performed while standing or sitting at a workbench or the system location in the plant. This involves using repetitive hand and arm movements such as power grip, fine grasping, pushing, and pulling to torque nuts and bolts to specifications.
  • Material and equipment handling — operating engineers must lift, carry, and place system components on work surfaces and material handling carts, pallets, and other fixtures. Pushes/pulls carts, pallet jacks, hand trucks and wheeled fixtures around shop or plant floor. Uses overhead hoists and cranes to move heavy assemblies. Operates man lifts to complete maintenance on tall/high equipment. Uses forklift to move oversized/heavy loads over medium and long distances. This requires bending/twisting at the waist, lifting and carrying objects of up to 100 lbs.,

Qualities/Skills

  • Minimum 5 yrs. experience
  • Operating Engineer or maintenance machinist; unlimited CFC license; Utilityman Class A or C, Boiler Technician Class A or C; AA/AS Engineering or Maintenance Management
