Post Doc Research Associate - Understanding Canopy Effects on Land-Atmosphere Coupling (9962)
Overview
The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.
Responsibilities
The Atmospheric Climate and Earth Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to improve our process-level understanding of how heterogenous forest canopies affect the coupling between the ground and the boundary layer. This will be accomplished by integrating findings from new observations from sub- and near-surface in situ sampling, tall meteorological towers, remote sensing instruments, and aerial platforms with those from high-resolution meteorological simulations. The incumbent will work on one or more of the following areas: (1) analyze a wide range of measurements to elucidate ground-canopy-atmosphere-cloud interactions (2) modify or implement new canopy parameterizations in Large Eddy Simulation and/or mesoscale models, (3) evaluate LES and/or mesoscale model predictions that couple the ground, surface layer, canopy, and boundary layer, (4) examine water vapor pathways from transpiration, and (5) connect these insights with the turbulent mixing and chemical transformation of trace gases emitted from the soil and vegetation. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with other atmospheric scientists at PNNL.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An understanding of the wide ranges of processes interacting within and just above the forest canopy
- Experience in evaluating models with observations
- Familiarity with processes that control the aerosol or cloud lifecycle
- A PhD degree in Earth Sciences, Climate Science, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Physics, Statistics, or a related field
