Service and Community Leaders 2025-2026

Join our team through the Stony Brook University Career Center and support the mission of the SBU Center for Service Learning & Community Service to create and sustain partnerships between the university and community organizations, increase community engagement on campus, produce global citizens, and support underserved communities. This is an excellent opportunity to engage Stony Brook students in community service on and off campus and create partnerships with community agencies. You will learn about community needs and you will develop skills in outreach, promotion, event planning, and operations. The knowledge and skills you will gain from this internship will position you for career options in a variety of industry sectors, both in and out of the nonprofit world, including business, healthcare, IT, and more. The first semester is unpaid and the second semester is paid based on performance.

 

These internships are open to students of all majors and backgrounds. Each role offers hands-on experience and the chance to develop skills that are valuable across any field, making them a great opportunity for anyone looking to grow professionally and expand their career readiness.

Students must commit to this internship for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, earning 6 credits (3 per semester) to fulfill EXP+. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Promote community service opportunities to individual students and student groups through bi-weekly email communications, meetings, and presentations
  • Work with SBU students through Peer-to-Peer conversations; Develop knowledge to effectively guide students through GivePulse, the main  platform for community service, connecting them with service opportunities and/or agencies 
  • Create and maintain relationships with student organizations by assessing potential community service opportunities and presenting at meetings to increase volunteering engagement
  • Managing various supplies and storage units to keep organization and awareness of different materials 
  • Assist with events: volunteer fairs, community partner panels, info sessions, and campus community events
  • Assist with outreach to prospective community partners via email or phone to develop new community relationships and enhance existing nonprofit relationships (ie. support event management through follow up calls to agencies)
  • Use databases and systems to review and approve community service opportunities
  • Assist with maintenance of Center for Service Learning and Community Service website with current opportunities and events
  • Assist with identifying academic programs, faculty and staff to incorporate service projects in the classroom
  • Participate in weekly training to support professional and personal growth. *Intern is required to be available from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week when classes are in session.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA; Sophomore, Junior or Senior status by Fall 2025 semester**Note: To be considered for this internship, please ensure that your cumulative GPA is reflected on your resume.*
  • Proven time management skills with a strong sense of customer service
  • Efficient in interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; Proven presentation ability
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Willingness to be a proactive self starter; incorporating new ideas to bring on the team
  • Collaboration skills and team orientation
  • Proficient with Google Workspace (Calendar, Sheets, Slides)
