Engineering Aide II
The City of Saint Paul Public Works Department is hiring four individuals to perform routine field and/or office engineering work assisting more experienced employees with drafting, inspecting, and surveying in Sewer Utility, Survey, Street Construction, and Maps and Records.
Here’s what you can expect to do:
Sewer Utility - 1 vacancy
- Assist with and scheduling and performing of sewer inspections.
- Issue sewer permits and maintain sewer records.
- Provide requested sewer data to property owners, contractors, consultants, and other customers.
- Act as a sewer backup inspector in the field inspecting the private sewer repair work of licensed house sewer contractors.
- Assist in managing the various forms of sewer data, including but not limited to private sewer permit drawings, ArcGIS sewer database, sewer data portal, and sewer data request.
Survey - 1 vacancy
- Ensure work trucks for survey and engineering projects have materials necessary for crews including setting up work zone traffic control systems.
- Assist with staking streets, sewer, and water mains during construction projects.
- Provide maintenance to technology and equipment including but not limited to LIDAR data and equipment, Trimble software, Dini Level, and Global Positioning System (GPS).
- Maintain construction land surveying records.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Crew Leads, such as assisting with mapping projects and CAD data processing.
Street Construction - 1 vacancy
- Assist in the inspection of Street Construction Project (from inspection to closeout).
- Enforce and ensure City, State and Federal specification are upheld on construction projects.
- Perform daily journal documentation to record location, quantity, quality, dimension and tolerance of constructed roadway items to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
- Work and Coordinate with residents, businesses, other city department, contractors, and utility companies.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor and lead inspectors including GIS mapping data, pavement management and material testing.
Maps and Records - 1 vacancy
- Perform multiple duties associated with Customer Service such as answering telephone and e-mail inquiries.
- Assist in Issuing official addresses per Legislative Code guidelines for permits, change of address requests, land subdivisions, requests for additional addresses on a property, and for various structures.
- Assist in issuing permits and reviewing lot split applications.
- Maintain and update as-built records, right-of-way, lot surveys, plats, and other City records using FileMaker Pro, Excel, microfilm, logbooks, GIS, CAD, and the Card Catalog.
- Assist external and internal customers to access as-built records, plats, maps, surveys, and other historical records.
- Demonstrate the use of the digital microfilm scanner, microfilm reader and the large format scanner.

Position Requirements:
Completion of one year in a Civil Technology program at a technical college or equivalent.
OR
One year of course work acceptable toward an undergraduate degree in Civil engineering as offered by the U of M or equivalent.
OR
Two years as an Engineering Aide I or equivalent.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating
The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.
Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
