Youth and Family Programs Summer Intern
Join our team for an unforgettable, hands-on experience working directly with the Smithsonian’s summer youth programs on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.!
About the Role:
As a Summer Program Intern, you’ll support and coordinate Smithsonian Summer Camp, Smithsonian Sleepovers, and Discovery Theater programs. This is a unique opportunity to work with campers, assist Youth Teacher Assistants, and engage in program planning and logistics while exploring arts administration, museum education, and event production.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with program logistics, communications, and daily operations
- Support campers (K-9th grade) and Youth Teacher Assistants (ages 15+)
- Plan, produce, and organize educational materials
- Attend and assist at camp, before/after care, and sleepover events
- Research and create social media content; learn the Learning Lab platform
- Participate in team collaboration to brainstorm future programming ideas
Qualifications:
- Interest in education, arts administration, or event planning
- Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member
- Experience or interest in working with children, teachers, and parents
Program Details:
Location: S. Dillon Ripley Center, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
Commitment: Full summer (late May – late August), 40+ hours/week
Schedule: Mon-Fri; shifts vary by program (early June orientation, sleepovers include evenings/weekends)
Compensation: $5,000 stipend (housing not provided)
Mentorship: This role is supervised by Brigitte Blachère, Program Manager, offering a professional development experience in cultural education and event management.
