Staff Air Pollution Specialist

One of CARB’s most important functions is fulfilling its clean air mission through the implementation of the board’s rules, and programs to protect the health of Californians. An integral part of this process is the assessment of the health impacts of these efforts to reduce public exposures to pollution.  We are looking for a dynamic and creative candidate with a strong background in air pollution and air quality modeling, health impact analysis, and work regarding elucidating disparate exposures especially for vulnerable populations.

 

The Staff Air Pollution Specialist (SAPS) position is located within CARB’s Health and Exposure Assessment Branch (HEAB) in the Building and Indoor Environment Section (BIES) which conducts research and activities to address indoor air quality and personal exposure while also supporting the branch’s broader work on expanding health analysis approaches. The incumbent will also work closely with the Health and Ecosystem Analysis Section (HEAS) in HEAB which provides scientific and technical support for the Board’s efforts to achieve statewide air pollution and climate goals and conducts quantitative health analysis.

 

This rewarding and challenging position is responsible for the assessment of current and development of novel methodologies for quantitatively and qualitatively determining the health impacts of air pollution related the board’s rules and programs under direction of the Section Managers and Branch Chief. This work also includes evaluation of critical information from scientific studies on human health and environmental effects of air pollutants, particularly in vulnerable communities, and determining how to incorporate this information in health analysis. The incumbent will be expected to use quantitative health analysis tools to support the Branch’s work. The incumbent will also establish relationships and work with other divisions within CARB, additional state agencies, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders as part of the method assessment and development process. The incumbent will be expected to communicate health effects of air pollution including research results, and health implications of the board’s rules and programs to a wide range of audiences including internal staff, other state agencies, and the public through updates, reports, correspondence, meetings and workgroups.

Working Conditions

 

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense.
