This position goes from GS-03, step 01 ($35,947 per year) to GS-05, step 10 ($60,439 per year). The actual salary will be set based on the grade, step, and location of the selectee(s) and/or position. View the 2024 Locality Pay Charts for more information.
As a Student Trainee, you will provide professional assistance and direct administrative support to various offices within the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate.
Duties:
As a Student Trainee/Intern, you will gain valuable professional, administrative, and/or technical on-the-job training and experience with the opportunity to explore future career possibilities with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- Gain valuable professional, administrative, and/or technical on-the-job training and experience with the opportunity to explore future career possibilities with Refugee, Asylum and International Operations (RAIO).
- Research pertinent information from existing sources including hard copy or electronic files, instructions, and standard operating procedures.
- Assure data in information systems for assigned work is complete, current and accurate.
- Review documents for pertinent data related to a specific program or project and assist in distributing information within the office.
- Perform work that requires oral and written communications.
- Attend training as directed to enhance knowledge in specific administrative areas.

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on the closing date of this announcement.
GS:03: You qualify at the GS-03 level if you:
- Have successfully completed one (1) full academic year of post-high school study AND are enrolled at least half time in an accredited institution.
GS:04: You qualify at the GS-04 level if you:
- Have successfully completed two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree from an accredited institution. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours AND are enrolled at least half time in an accredited institution.
GS-05: You qualify at the GS-05 level if you:
- Have successfully completed four (4) academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree AND are enrolled at least half time in an accredited institution.
Other Information:
Telework: USCIS provides telework opportunities for eligible employees serving in positions approved to work at an alternate work site in accordance with agency policy. Teleworkers are required to work at the official worksite at least two days during each bi-weekly pay period. Teleworkers are expected to work during dismissals and closures or request leave. THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION. You will be expected to report for work at a USCIS facility based on the needs of the hiring office. If you are currently on an approved remote agreement, once you EOD into this position, your remote agreement will be terminated.
This is a Student Intern position in the Pathways Program. Selected individuals are placed in an excepted service position that integrates their academic studies with relevant federal work experience. At the successful completion of the Student Intern's academic studies and program requirements, the agency may non-competitively convert the student to a term or permanent position in the competitive service. Conversion to a Federal competitive service position will be at the discretion of the agency and is neither guaranteed nor implied.
