This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions at various Neighborhood and Community Service (NCS) locations throughout Fairfax County. These positions are 0.75 FTE (30 hours per week) with benefits.

Center Program Specialists plan, prepare, and lead community center activities that are age and ability appropriate.
Supports stewardship of the “One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy” goals by assisting with the development and facilitation of programs and activities that serve a multi-cultural and economically diverse population as assigned (youth, adults, older adults, families.) Serves in a supervision role for community center non-merit staff (Recreation Leader II and IIIs) and volunteers as needed. In the absence of their site supervisor(s), serves as lead to include opening and closing of facilities. Monitors the care and maintenance of equipment and facilities of the center. Completes necessary administrative duties in support of center operations. Collects and reports required community center statistical data. Ensures safety of participants and responds promptly to emergency situations. Responsible for greeting center patrons, handling inquiries, making referrals to appropriate resources, and accepting payments of fees. Communicates effectively in-person and on the telephone with participants, while fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. Transports participants using center vehicle. Maintains required professional training, such as first aid and CPR, food manager’s certificate and driver’s license. The Center operates daily including night and weekend hours, six days a week. Must be able to work nights and weekends.
As part of the NCS Team, these positions will: work to engage community and resident leaders to develop responses to changing needs using a place-based and population-based approach; work closely with leadership to coordinate a shared vision, actionable strategies, and support a framework for the county's engagement of community members; promote a high-performing organization that ensures the work is directly connected to the department and the human services system priorities and outcome areas; and support and promote equity-based programs and practices that address needs and equitable access to opportunities to enhance well-being and community inclusion.

General Duties
Assists in the program delivery duties of the assigned facilities;
Ensures staff compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards;
Informs the public of pertinent rules and regulations;
Directs residents to private and public resources and programs;
Delivers customer service by distributing literature and providing information;
Assists as a liaison between County agencies, residents and other community centers.
Operations
Provides operational support by supervising non-merit personnel of assigned facilities.
Programming
Assists management in the daily program delivery of several specialized programs and special events at assigned facilities;
Assists management in the collection of data and records management necessary for the operation and evaluation of programs.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center management;
Ability to assist center management with the collection and tracking of program data and outcomes needed for compiling administrative reports;
Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment;
Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, and the public;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education, plus one year of related experience in a recreation center or facility, OR one year of experience organizing and coordinating public recreation activities or community outreach, as applicable to the position.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Motor vehicle operator’s license;
- Food Sanitation Certificate (within 90 days of appointment);
- First Aid and CPR certification (within 90 days of appointment).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with the following: community-based recreation programming; community and/or senior center operations and prevention oriented programs for youth and older adults; community-based recreation programming for individuals with disabilities; supervising recreation employees; conducting outreach and programming to diverse cultures; outcome-based recreation programming; working with self-directed teams; managing multiple programs and projects; coordinating volunteer programs and services; and developing partnerships, sponsorships or collaborative programs and services with public and private agencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is active in nature. Must be able to monitor and observe the activities of program participants. Regularly moves about or positions self to supervise and interact with participants at their level. Occasionally lifts, transports, positions, push/pulls or moves up to 50 pounds. Must be sufficiently mobile and possess a range of motion to perform repetitive standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, sitting on the floor, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting. Ability to react quickly to the physical actions of program participant. Administrative and supervisory activities will require ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Sufficiently mobile to attend meetings at various locations and make presentations to county staff and community.
