Join the team at Fairfax County to deliver cutting edge geospatial solutions to the county government and public at large. As a senior member of the Geospatial Applications and Systems Branch in the Geographic Information Systems Division, this position is a technical and business expert in the field of geospatial technology, responsible for providing technologically based geographic services to county agencies and the public with a focus on enterprise system administration. This position is responsible for the following:
- Builds and maintains enterprise GIS systems.
- Proactively monitors the GIS systems for proper performance, troubleshoot issues, and collaborates with county IT to ensure the overall health of the GIS database system.
- Designs and supports system integrations between GIS and systems owned or operated by other county agencies.
- Designs and implements the automation of system administration and data transformation tasks using Python, PowerShell, SQL and other languages.
- Manages and/or participates in complex projects to develop spatially based solutions for complex business problems in response to agency requests or needs.
- Participating in the evaluation of new systems and services that include a GIS component
- Performs software configuration management duties as part of the application development and deployment process.
- Participates on governance committees for implementing standards for enterprise GIS data, web, and mobility.
- This position will act as a consultant with agencies’ GIS and IT analysts to determine requirements for GIS solutions and data.
- Works as a liaison with county agencies to ensure that COTS software packages requiring GIS are properly integrated with the enterprise GIS system.
- Develops and maintains applications, maps, and dashboards using GIS software such as ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Stays up to date with the latest developments in GIS technology, SQL Server, and related tools.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field which included coursework in Oracle and/or another complex database platform; plus two years of experience in working with and developing systems utilizing GIS platforms such as ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop or Server software suites; or performing GIS modeling (e.g., relationship classes, topologies, 3-D, object, data) and spatial analysis (e.g., proximity analysis, image analysis, routing analysis).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six years of GIS system administration experience, including at least two years with the ArcGIS Enterprise suite, specifically Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server.
- Experience with other ArcGIS Enterprise software such as ArcGIS Image Server and ArcGIS GeoEvent Server.
- At least two years of GIS-related script development experience, preferably using Python.
- Working knowledge of virtualized desktop environments, such as Azure.
- Experience with GIS-specific APIs, including ArcPy, ArcGIS API for Python, and ArcGIS REST APIs.
- Knowledge of software development and debugging tools and techniques, including experience with Visual Studio, browser-based development and diagnostic tools, and Jupyter Notebooks.
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Desktop, including extensions such as Spatial Analyst and Network Analyst.
- Experience with SQL Server features, including spatial databases, spatial indexes, and spatial functions.
- Knowledge of relational database systems and programs used for GIS and geodatabase processing.
- Project management experience.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong understanding of GIS technology, including spatial analysis and geospatial data processing and modeling techniques.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to be dynamic, proactive, and take initiative to propose and implement innovative solutions to improve processes and outcomes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary, performed in a normal office environment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
