PhD Intern - Battery Materials Research (9714)

Overview

 

Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.


Responsibilities

 

The Battery Materials & Systems Group within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking highly motivated PhD intern students to join our cutting-edge battery research projects.

 

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on innovative energy materials and devices, delving into fundamental mechanisms using advanced characterization tools. We are particularly interested in individuals with a strong background in chemistry, material synthesis, characterization, cell assembly, and testing.

  • Apply basic scientific theories to well-defined tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Utilize conceptual knowledge of scientific or engineering theories, practices, and procedures within your specialization.
  • Follow instructions on required tasks and complete them on time and within budget, working under the guidance of experienced staff.
  • Communicate the importance of work within the team effectively.


Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 preferred.
  • Solid training in chemistry, materials science, polymer science, or chemical engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience with liquid electrolytes, solid state electrolyte, Na-ion batteries, Li metal batteries, and Li-S batteries are preferred.
  • Hands-on experience or demonstrated ability to work on materials synthesis, characterization, and coin cell assembly and evaluation.
  • Ability to work independently and safely.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
