This position is a classified regional engineer for the State of Louisiana Department of Health Office of Public Health Safe Drinking Water and Community Sewage Programs.  It may be filled at the Engineer Intern Applicant-Engineer 5 level (see bottom of description for more details).  The incumbent may work out of Rapides or Ouachita parish.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Analyze/Implement environmental activities needed within the complete scope of public health engineering activities for the Central Louisiana Region.
  • Conducts surveys and evaluations of water and wastewater facilities using specialized public health engineering expertise to ensure protection of the public health and compliance with Federal and State Laws and regulation.
  • Performs the review and approval of highly technical engineering plans and specifications for proposed water and wastewater facilities submitted by engineers and architects.
  • Provides functional supervision and technical assistance to consulting engineers, architects, sanitarians, water and wastewater operators and public and elected officials regarding water and wastewater concerns.
  • Assists with collection of and monitors the interpretation of chemical and bacteriological analytical data, the evaluation of public health risks associated with the analysis results, and the recommendations of treatment practices or processes to achieve compliance with relevant Safe Drinking Water Rules.
  • Coordinates/performs regional public health engineering responses to natural and man-made emergencies, such as floods, hurricanes, freezes, back-siphonage events involving chemical contaminants, acts of terrorism, outbreaks of communicable diseases, etc.

The minimum qualifications are: 

Engineer Intern Applicant: Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate. (Maximum of 2 years to earn a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate)

Engineer Intern 1: Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate

Engineer Intern 2:  Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate plus one year of professional engineering experience.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree or Ph.D. in engineering will substitute for the one year of required experience.

Engineer 3: Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

Engineer 4: Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering and one of the following:
1. One year of licensed engineering experience.
2. Five years of professional engineering experience. SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience.
A Ph.D. in engineering will substitute for two years of the required experience.

Engineer 5: Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering and one of the following:
1. Two years of licensed engineering experience.
2. Six years of professional engineering experience.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience.
A Ph.D. in engineering will substitute for two years of the required experience.
