Civil Designer I

Under general supervision, the Civil Designer I will work closely with civil engineers to ensure that projects, programs, and procedures are effectively and efficiently administered by providing practical technical expertise in the analysis, coordination, and delivery of engineering functions. The Civil Designer I will assist various activities of the Engineer Department to promote process optimization in engineering projects and assist junior technicians in the civil engineering development track. 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam preferred
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies
  • Reacts to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently
  • Organizational skills
  • Principles and practices of algebra, geometry and trigonometry as applied to computation of angles, areas, distances, and traverses
  • Understand how to research and read engineering maps and records
  • Principles and practices of technical report writing and data presentations
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills required; ability to interface well and work effectively in a team environment; willingness to learn and support project management activities
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects, and schedules
  • Ability to respond quickly to rush projects, multiple deadlines, or emergencies
  • Ability to work in a team setting and get along well with others; work with accuracy; reliability; resourcefulness; good judgment
  • Ability to understand construction plans
  • Ability to use a desktop computer, CAD software, and Microsoft Office
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to meet project deadlines

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordination of research, planning, design, and other comprehensive materials needed for engineering projects and activities
  • Operating AutoCAD, Civil 3D, other engineering software and Microsoft Office to create detailed drawings, plans, and specifications for civil engineering projects
  • Directly supports the operations of the Engineering Department with routine projects to ensure familiarity with the full range of operating conditions
  • Participates in the development of designs, plans, and specifications for projects
  • Attend project meetings and contribute to discussions on project progress and challenges
  • Performs field inspections as needed
  • Interpret specifications for city, state, and federal requirements as needed
  • Prepare periodic project status reports
  • Provide performance and task analysis required to complete projects
  • Assist in the collection and interpretation of survey data for engineering projects
  • Interpret specifications and provide information on pertinent codes
  • Work collaboratively with all levels of all departments in development and design
