Job Summary:
The Department of Microbiology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This instructor position would join a team of several instructors in the Department of Microbiology within OSU’s College of Science. The position has primary responsibility for delivering instruction in a range of courses in the field of microbiology and disease, with significant emphasis on classes for students interested in a career in the health professions. Courses will be delivered in a variety of formats, including lecture, laboratory, online, and experiential learning. Instruction will be delivered with a commitment to providing equitable learning opportunities to students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Instructors in the Department of Microbiology contribute to the continued innovation of the department’s undergraduate curricula and academic programs and participate in faculty governance.
The Department of Microbiology delivers two majors through the College of Science (COS ): Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences. The current enrollments in these majors are about 160 and 740. About 35 students enrolled in the Microbiology Graduate Program participate in instruction of laboratory courses as Graduate Teaching Assistants. Students in both majors obtain strong laboratory skills. Microbiology graduates are employed in industrial or medical laboratory positions or continue to graduate school or health profession schools. BioHealth Science students typically pursue careers in some aspect of healthcare, or continue to health profession schools.
The Microbiology faculty consists of 14 research professors and 4 instructors. Research interests encompass studies in the biology and pathogenesis of bacteria and viruses, microbial ecology and evolution, bioinformatics, microbial interactions, and environmental microbiology. What You Will Need
• M.S. in Microbiology or a closely-related field
• One year of full-time instructional or teaching experience
• Demonstrated commitment to enhancing and promoting equal opportunity and diversity
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
• Ph.D. or another advanced degree post M.S in Microbiology or closely related field
• Evidence of understanding and use of evidence-based pedagogy in teaching
• Formal experience in teaching in a large lecture format (>75 students)
• Formal experience in teaching laboratory classes in the biological sciences
• Formal experience in teaching online courses
• Experience or demonstrated interest in teaching scientific writing
• Participation in community outreach events or in leading/developing experiential learning activities for students
• Research or professional experience in a medically related field of microbiology
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
40 hours/week in classroom, teaching lab and office
