Mental Health Worker
Position Summary:
Care Hawaii is a behavioral health care organization seeking a compassionate and dependable Mental Health Worker (MHW) to support the daily functions of CAREs provision of services. CARE Hawaii, Inc. contracts with multiple stakeholders to provide an array of services. The Mental Health Worker is a member of a multidisciplinary team, responsible for organizing, coordinating, and monitoring all contract operations under the direction of the Director.
The primary duty of the Mental Health Worker is to provide crisis stabilization and crisis support management to individuals experiencing immediate and often life-threatening crisis situations in a residential setting. The Mental Health Worker has advanced training in a mental health profession (i.e., nursing, social work, psychology) and clinical skills. The MHW may provide a range of clinical and supportive services under the supervision of a Mental Health Professional/Team Leader or Qualified Mental Health Professional.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited college or university in one or more of the following fields:
- Social Work, Nursing
- Counseling
- Psychology
- Psychosocial Rehabilitation
- Sociology
- Human Development
- Other closely related fields, as approved in writing by the AMHD Chief or designee, providing the individual has completed: 12 credit hours of post high school coursework in the areas of psychology, counseling, social work, or other areas of human development, and one (1) year of experience providing direct services to individuals with mental illness or other behavioral health issues.
Individuals may also qualify by having one (1) or more of the following credentials: A Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) or any one of the following credentials in the State of Hawaii, along with 12 credit hours of post high school coursework in the areas of psychology, counseling, social work, or other areas of human development, and one (1) year of experience providing direct services to individuals with mental illness or other behavioral health issues.
- A Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC)
- A Certified Peer Specialist (HCPS)
- A Registered Nurse (RN)
- A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
All post high school coursework must have been completed at, and the degree issued by a nationally accredited institution.
For degrees issued outside of the United States, the issuing institution must meet similar accrediting standards or be recognized within the United States as having equal standing.
The rate of pay will be based on education and experience.
Minimum Experience: Strong clinical skills and experience demonstrating competence in problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and clinical competencies in providing education and training to staff members.
Experience may also include identification and evaluation of the consumer’s problems and needs, the development of a service or treatment plan, the initiation and implementation of the treatment plan, monitoring of services and evaluation/assessment of the consumer’s progress. Applicable experience will be included regardless of a paid or unpaid experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates a welcoming, empathic, and integrated approach towards all consumers in the residential setting
- Provide crisis stabilization and crisis support management based on risk assessment
- Function independently as well as in collaboration with other members of the crisis team as needed
- Assume primary responsibility for developing, writing, implementing, evaluating, and revising crisis plans such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and Crisis Triage Rating Scale (CTRS) in conjunction with the other members of the crisis team
- Provide individual crisis stabilization and crisis management, ensuring immediate changes are made in the crisis plans as clients’ needs change
- Educate and support clients' families, and advocate for clients' rights and preferences
- Conduct comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history, mental status, and diagnosis; physical/dental health; use of drugs or alcohol, education/employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living; and family structure and relationships. Submit charts within seven (7) days.
- Acts as liaison and consult with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the crisis management process
- Perform shift management and on-call intervention covering nighttime hours and serve as a backup to evening and weekend staff
- Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures
- Provide ongoing assessment and response to crisis management
- Provide transportation when necessary to clients
- Provide symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms
- Provide direct clinical "in-vivo" services on an individual, group, and family basis
- Provide vocational-supportive counseling
- Teach job-seeking skills
- Provide linkage as appropriate to providers of case management, treatment, nutritional education, housing placement, money management skills, transportation options
- Provide support, advocacy, linkage, and coordination of services as needed
- Attends team meetings and training on a regular basis and requires monthly supervision.
- Demonstrates ability to work as a team player by working with other members of the crisis team, assisting other team members as needed
- Provides required documentation in a timely manner (within 24 hours per contract requirements)
- Provide ongoing assessment and response to treatment
- Perform job coaching, problem solving, and support on and off the job site
- Help with nutritional education/food preparation, housing placement, money management skills, transportation options.
- Provide support, advocacy, and coordination of social, vocational and activities of daily living needs.
- Responsibly reports to work on time/consistent attendance and follows program protocol when calling in sick and or for emergencies.
- Communicates appropriately, effectively, and respectfully with all staff and clients.
- Provide therapeutic interventions for the clients
- Willingly performs other duties/responsibilities as requested
Additional Duties
- Assist with Quality Improvement development and monitoring
- Participate in team meetings
- Prepare written or electronic reports as requested
- Interfaces with CARE Hawaii, Inc. staff
- Participates in conflict resolution as necessary
- Maintain chart filing, ensuring charts are properly completed thoroughly and monitor charts to ensure charts are always compliant and audit ready
