Student Lab Assistant - work study
Overview of the Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Our lab is seeking a dedicated and well-organized student lab assistant that will assist in weekly lab activities that include:
- making reagents
- running experiments,
- collecting samples
- maintaining accurate study records
- inventory upkeep
- Communication, following IACUC, EHS, and IU regulations and protocols
- detailed note-taking are essential for this position
We are looking for someone that can work between 10-20hrs a week.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have the ability to communicate thoroughly and timely, while keeping pristine data records
- Must have completed one university-level biology lab.
- Must have the ability to work 6hrs+/week.
- Federal work-study award required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Skilled in wet-lab research,
- working experience in rodent handling
Learned Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
In accordance with the IUI Profiles of Learning for Undergraduate Success, experience in this position will help students become acquainted with the following profiles:
- Communicator: by building relationships with other researchers and collaborators, which will help in building active listening skills. The researcher will also learn to evaluate information and convey ideas effectively, via email, presentations, and record-keeping.
- Problem Solver: You will also use learn how to think more critically while learning to analyze and evaluate effectively as a problem solver.
- Innovator: As an innovator, you will learn to investigate new research proposals as well as helping to create presentations, data sets, and protocol development.
- Community Contributor: Lastly, as a community contributor, you will learn the ethics of research, understand and anticipate consequences while engaging and merging in the research culture with your own.
Students will learn how to be better communicate scientific knowledge by presenting information from published scientific articles as well as their own research results to faculty, peers and fellow students. Individuals in this position will improve their active listening skills by interacting with and assisting other students while performing their job.
Problem Solver – Students will collaborate with peers and professionals across campus to understand and trouble shoot research protocols. Students will gain analytical skills by evaluating current procedures and determining effectiveness through the use of data and research. Innovator – Students will learn how to generate new research ideas based on published scientific results and newly acquired data. This position will teach students how to make decisions quickly through the use of problem solving and collaborating with peers.
Community Contributor – Students will gain knowledge about other cultures through interacting with faculty, peers and fellow students from diverse backgrounds. This position will provide students with skills to help communicate with others and appreciate how the scientific process of discovery varies based upon prior education and life experiences.
