Internship Title: Intermodal Data Analyst Intern
Department: Fleet – Intermodal
Report to: Manager Intermodal Operations
Location: Charlotte, NC
Duration: Seeking a one-year internship with flexibility and part-time commitment depending on school, summer, etc. Example: 10-20 hours/wk. during school and 25-30 hours/wk. during summer. Will consider half-year or summer-only options depending on circumstances. (Start date as early as 1/1/2025)
Overview:
The Intern will work with a highly engaged and fun operations team to develop a variety of data analytics, build data visualizations, prepare reports, and participate in process improvement discussions for the operation. Intermodal Operations manages the largest fleet of railroad intermodal equipment in North America.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Build, research, design, and enhance data visualizations and new metrics needed to support and improve operations.
- Support and manage routine reports by running, prepping, and sending to internal and external customers.
- Assist in the day-to-day Intermodal activities, including verifying car status, distribution of equipment, and updating daily reports.
- Actively seeks, recommends, and participates in departmental process improvements, and collaborates with management on issue resolution.
- Research ways to analyze data using different statistical methods.

- Knowledge of SQL and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills – inquisitive, good verbal communicator, professional demeanor.
- Persistent – ability to perform research and problem-solve. Knowing how to follow through to complete a project.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistics, and calculations.
- Ability to deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and solve practical problems.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science with concentrations in any of the following: Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, Computer Science, Logistics, Business, Information Systems, or another STEM field.
- Year in school: Masters preferred, minimum 3 years of bachelor’s at an accredited college/university.
