COLLEGE CO-OP COMPLIANCE SERVICES DIVISION (CSD) (SAFETY)

CO-OP LEARNING MISSION

To establish a partnership with colleges and universities, exposing as many students as possible to employment opportunities in the Wastewater Industry and to help them become experienced professionals in the next generation workforce.

CO-OP LEARNING PURPOSE

To attract and cultivate bright and energetic college students and maintain ongoing partnerships with colleges and universities. It is our goal to expose these students to applied safety program management principles as well as career opportunities in water resource management and the environmental sciences. The Co-op program also serves as a recruitment tool to assist the Regulatory Compliance and Safety (RCS) Division in hiring full-time personnel.

CO-OP LEARNING OVERVIEW 

Under direct supervision of the project manager, the Co-Op will perform assigned work by applying OSHA standards and MSD written program regulations to practical applications. The co-op will work closely with Senior Environment Safety Specialists, assisting with Safety Audits, assisting staff during the various training sessions facilitated by the safety team, and providing support on various safety initiative improvement projects.

CO-OP LEARNING EXPECTATIONS                 

The co-op will learn the various components to the MSD safety programs and will learn:

1.      Audit Reporting Techniques; planning phased audits and time management, audit report formatting, document custody and written communication, follow up assessments.

2.      Asset Management; safety equipment inventory principles include physical inventory and equipment tracking, chemical inventory, SDS binder updates, noise level surveys, air quality sampling.

3.      Equipment Maintenance; inspection requirements and calibration schedules identified in the equipment maintenance program.

4.      Public Speaking; assisting with the various training sessions facilitated by the safety team.

5.      Safety Initiative Improvement Projects; working up data, preparing spreadsheets, and developing content.

Spring Semester 2025

CO-OP LEARNING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

·       Undergraduate student

·       Major – Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Fire Science, or closely related

·       Prefer successful completion of basic chemistry lab coursework
