Coding Coordinator

Job Description

Position: Coding Coordinator 

Reports to: HIM Manager 

Schedule: Full Time, Monday – Friday 8am – 430 pm (Flexible)

Job Summary: The Coding Coordinator would assist in the day-to-day management of operations within the Coding Department. The Coding Coordinator is responsible for providing coding expertise to all clinical staff and coding specialists during concurrent coding processes to ensure coding accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze medical records and documentation to ensure accurate coding and billing prior to release of case to billing. 
  • Identifies documentation issues (lacking documentation, missed physician queries, appropriate level of service, CPT/Rev Codes and E&M codes, etc.) that impact coding accuracy and clean claims. Clearly communicates (verbally and in written reports or summaries) opportunities for documentation improvement related to coding issues to coders and clinical staff.
  • Monitors areas and opportunities that could hold up coding/billing and clinical decisions.
  • Assists in Coordinating  record completion tasks to decrease  physician documentation  delinquency 
  • Verifies/Audits all charges are documented and charged accurately in EMR 
  • Monitors coding accuracy, billing edits/denials; provides feedback and focused education on the monitoring results
  • Serves as a coding expert for coding staff, physicians, and hospital departments to obtain information or clarification on accurate and ethical coding and documentation standards, guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors unbilled accounts report for un-coded discharges to reduce outstanding account receivables for all patient types.
  • Keeps abreast of ICD/CPT coding changes and reimbursement methodologies affecting coding functions.
  • Conducts trend analyses to identify patterns and variations in coding and CMI.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals, which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Extensive and up to date knowledge of coding principles and guidelines including ICD10 
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and require minimal supervision with the ability to establish own priorities with best organizational interest in mind
  • Must have the ability to interact professionally with providers, management, and staff.

 

Licenses/Certifications: One of the following licenses is required: 3-5 years recent experience

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)  , or
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
