Rangeland Management Specialist

Are you a recent graduate looking for an opportunity to develop a federal career? Want to help ensure a climate-resilient, sustainable future for our nation's agriculture, forests, and natural resources? A position as a Rangeland Management Specialist with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) might be a great fit for you!

NRCS is seeking recently graduated or graduating individuals with a passion for the environment and commitment to action through public service to join our Pathways Recent Graduate Program. As a Rangeland Management Specialist with NRCS, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Making plant identifications and evaluations, determining plant community characteristics, basic soil-plant relationships, responses of plants to grazing use, and productivity of grazing lands.
  • Developing resource inventories, including identification of ecological sites, forage suitability groups, range conditions, range trends, and forage production.
  • Developing resource inventories, including identification of wildlife habitat, watershed qualities, and other resources, as a step in developing ecological site descriptions and conservation plans.
  • Assisting landowners in development of practical grazing management plans, including planned grazing systems, initial stocking rates, and utilization standards.

Pathways candidates will receive on-the-job training and exposure to a variety of functional areas within Rangeland Management and related natural resource conservation programs. As training advances and proficiency is demonstrated, work assignments will become increasingly challenging in order to provide formal experience in the principles, concepts, work processes, and regulations of assigned programs. All assignments are developmental in nature and designed to provide candidates with the necessary competencies to prepare them for conversion to a permanent position within the agency following completion of Pathways requirements.
