ADA Digital Accessibility Specialist

The Office of Communications (Office) coordinates the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) communications activities. The Office supports the strategic goals of CDPH through responding to questions from the news media, reporting public health data, manages CDPH's social media and website content, composing and distributing the Department's internal communications, and working on proactive public health messaging to both general audiences and underserved communities.
The ADA Digital Accessibility Specialist supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by evaluating ADA Compliance for web content and planning, organizing, and conducting training programs.
This position evaluates CDPH web pages and content to ensure they comply with the State of California's web accessibility requirements, as outlined in California Government Code Section 11135, ADA Section 508, and WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. The ADA Digital Accessibility Specialist will uses tools like Adobe Acrobat, WAVE, Color Contrast Analyzer, NVDA Screen Reader, and keyboard navigation while following federal and state guidelines to check for accessibility.
The candidate works under the general direction of the Information Officer II in the Office of Communications (COMMS) Web Team. The ADA Digital Accessibility Specialist collaborates, researches, develops and reviews web page content to ensure accessibility, consistency of message, quality of content and proper information organization prior to and following publishing. Incumbent ensures that all CDPH projects and activities comply with the State of California's web accessibility requirements.
The ADA Digital Accessibility Specialist creates, updates and develops customized training programs for specific internal groups to improve teamwork and efficiency. The Incumbent will educate and provide web staff with technical support in creating accessible web content such as documents, data dashboards, web applications, videos, and social media campaigns according to department standards before these are published online.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Extensive understanding of the principles and best practices for creating accessible digital content
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage the development and implementation of web accessibility standards
- In-depth knowledge of information technology systems, software, and tools commonly used in web services
- Proficiency in using analytical methods to create effective and engagement training materials
- Knowledge of federal and state laws on accessibility, policy changes, and strategic development at the organizational level.
- Strong critical thinking and strategic planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, balance competing priorities, and contribute to web content creation and development.
