Special Education Behavior Support Aide

Reports To: Education Services Director
Classification: Full Time, Hourly – non-exempt
This Behavior Support Aide is responsible for providing one-on-one support for students attending our Step Up Alternative Education Program throughout the day in all scheduled activities. Under the guidance of a teacher or Intervention Specialist, this position is responsible for delivering direct educational, daily living, and vocational instruction for students with moderate to significant developmental disabilities. The Behavior Support Aide is additionally expected to work with multiple students throughout the work week, assist teachers and staff with identifying and implementing behavior intervention strategies that align with Stepping Stones’ PBIS system, provide ongoing feedback and support to the Education Services Director on program-wide PBIS implementation, and participate as member of crisis response situations as needed. This position is a full-time, year-round, on-site position working approximately 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm.
Job Duties:
- Provides classroom support to students through individualized and small group educational and behavioral assistance.
- Participates as a member of a classroom team in planning and implementing individualized approaches for each child’s behavior intervention needs.
- Familiarizes self with the student’s IEP, ETR, Behavior Plan, and other service records.
- Completes all assigned paperwork such as, but not limited to data sheets, assessments, incident reports, progress reports, etc.
- Supports teachers by assisting with noted assessments and contributing to student documentation such as but not limited to IEPs, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Plans.
- Completes all pre-evaluation paperwork.
- Ensures all required documentation is submitted accurately and on a timely basis.
- Records behavior and skill acquisition data to support assessment of intervention effectiveness and progress towards goals.
- Actively participate in daily debriefings and student meetings, and staff or program meetings as scheduled.
- Supports classroom staff by working closely with them to promote a safe and professional environment.
- Collaborates with classroom teacher in the development and implementation of daily lesson plans.
Job Qualifications:
- An associate or undergraduate degree in behavior analysis, special education, psychology, or experience/certification as a behavior technician.
- Strong work ethic and highly developed interpersonal skills.
- History of excellent attendance and punctuality.
- An understanding of autism spectrum disorder and its corresponding behavior and sensory support needs.
- Exemplary patience and communication skills during heightened behaviors and de-escalation situations.
- Must be capable of sustained exertion and be able to participate in physical restraint techniques as required to ensure student safety, including the ability to lift at least 75 lbs.
- The ability to walk/move continuously for extended periods of time, indoors/outdoors as needed.
- Valid driver's license with reliable vehicle and willingness to submit to a criminal background check is also required.
About the Step-Up Alternative Education Program
This unique program partners with multiple Greater Cincinnati public schools to provide an alternative education program for students who have been unable to succeed in a typical classroom setting. Stepping outside of their home district, students of Step Up continue their studies at our 23-acre Given Road Campus in Indian Hill.
Utilizing our non-traditional education setting, Step-Up students receive the tools they need to successfully navigate academic studies, learn self-regulation skills, develop vocational skills through authentic experiences to enable them to transition into adulthood and more fully participate in their community. The Step-Up program operates 3-4 classrooms of up to seven students each, with most students utilizing 1:1 aides along with classroom teachers to engage in academic, communication, and functional living skill instruction.
