Yale - GSK Summer Research Program
Department Description:
The Yale - GSK Summer Research Program provides an opportunity for aspiring scientists to conduct cutting edge research in both academia and industry in the laboratories of Yale University and GlaxoSmithKline, respectively.
This position spans two summers. In the first summer, successful candidates will be invited to conduct research in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology or Chemical Engineering in the Departments of Chemistry or Engineering at Yale University. The subsequent summer, students will utilize, and build on, the training received to work on a project team at GSK within one of the following divisions: Chemical Development, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Synthetic Biology or the manufacturing Pilot Plant. Yale is located in New Haven, CT and GSK Upper Providence is located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA.
Job Description:
At Yale:
- Expected to contribute to ongoing research programs in synthetic organic chemistry, catalysis, chemical biology or chemical engineering.
- Meet regularly with their faculty advisor to discuss progress.
- Present their findings at the end of the training period.
At GSK:
- Be part of a team that is involved in the design and development of R&D assets.
- Expected to perform bench-scale experiments working with the team to develop, characterize or validate upstream processes and compile/analyze experimental results.
- Responsible for communicating results in the form of presentations and written reports as required.
- Expected to work seamlessly within a team, interacting on a routine basis with colleagues across chemistry divisions and other functional teams as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Either a second or third year undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or closely related Biological Science. Because this is a two-year program, students entering their third year in the Fall of 2025 will be given priority.
- Must be able to work full-time (35+ hours/week) throughout the duration of the assignment.
- Must have an active student status in a BS degree program.
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Hands on experienceperforming organic chemistry (synthesis, catalysis or related field), chemical biology or chemical engineering experiments, in an academic or professional laboratory is desired.
- Demonstrated record of scientific achievement and a basic knowledge of chemistry and/or general engineering.
- Highly motivated self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a matrix team
Benefits:
- While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
