Reforestation Fundraiser Assistant and Event Promotion (Social Media)
The Kent Conservation District (KCD) is a local government agency that assists residents and landowners with the conservation, management, and wise use of the natural resources of Kent County. We assist residents through countywide resource assessments, conservation resource distributions, conservation education, and one-on-one technical assistance.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The KCD Reforestation Fundraiser Assistant internship is designed to support interest in professional opportunities within the natural resource conservation and/or marketing-related fields. The KCD Internship program will provide leadership and development opportunities for an individual early in their career. The intern will assist KCD primarily with event planning/promotion activities, and community engagement regarding the KCD Spring Reforestation Fundraiser.
The internship position is a 16-week part-time position (estimated 10 hours per week), which begins in December 2024. Work hours are flexible and most of the work may be performed remotely.
Position Duties & Responsibilities:
- Research and compile information about species that will be offered in 2025.
- Create, update, and maintain shared files with the information and photos about the species offered.
- Prepare the KCD website with information about each species.
- With the help and guidance of the Director Manager, create social media posts to educate about and promote the species offered.
- Develop a social media calendar for spring fundraiser event promotions that will start in late March and run through mid-May.
- Create a sales catalog and a promotional postcard, which will be mailed to residents.
- Create a full-page and quarter page advertisement with an order form to be printed in the newspaper.
- Draft an informative article about the fundraiser, to be printed in the newspaper.
- Draft a 1-paragraph promotional description of the fundraiser for use in partner newsletters.
- Work with vendors to coordinate inventory for both sales. Submit a request list and prepare invoices as needed.
- Connect with volunteers to get them scheduled for different shifts for the plant sale and the tree sale. Promote volunteer opportunities to the community at large.
- Any other duties as necessary for the event development and promotion for Kent Conservation District.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Have completed the first year of an undergraduate program.
- Currently enrolled in a relevant field of study (natural resources, agriculture, forestry, biology, conservation, marketing, communications, etc.)
- Reliable access to a computer with a dependable internet connection.
- Reliable personal transportation
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- A 3.0 minimum grade point average on a 4.0 scale
ABILITIES:
- Very strong written communication skills.
- Experience using Meta, Canva, and other web-based tools.
- Entrepreneurial and able to solve problems independently and creatively.
- Self-motivated and goal-oriented.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Comfortable with a hybrid remote working environment.
- Able to work cooperatively with district personnel and other agencies.
- Must be able to pass a security background check.
SALARY, BENEFITS, WORK HOURS, LOCATION
This position will be based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Work time will mostly be remote with occasional visits to the KCD office. The Kent Conservation District office is located at 3200 Eagle Park Dr NE STE 100c Grand Rapids MI 49525.
This internship is designed to benefit a student with, not only relevant work experience, but also building a professional network, real-world work application, and conservation career discovery opportunity.
This is a temporary, (estimated 10 hours per week for 16 weeks) hourly position paying $0.00/hour. Work hours will be flexible with regular check-ins on work progress. Arrangements could be made for academic credit. Speak with your advisor for details.
